The #14 and #18 Randal Attack models are still being made. Nice designs even today. Long from being retired.

The last two I made for my own use. Double edged fighters, based again, on Randal designs for the most part. Lower blade design idea was my take of an early SOG recon by Ben Baker, who again, used Randal #1, #2 and #14 as inspiration for his ow CISO/SOG/CIA knife designs. Both (most) of mine are 1/4" stainless stock, with 7.5" blades. Canvas micarta handles, double hilts of nickel silver, which are silver soldered to full tangs, with no tang showing.

I'm also a member of a knife collector forum, we have a thread there in the traditionals section called "Hats and knives " my Stetson on the right and my Resistol on the left, with vintage folding hunters. A Western on the right and an Schrade Old Timer on the left.

WESTERN, Boulder, CO. ~1960. Its not marked, but I think its a L 84A. The sheath is narrow going to the snap. 9" total, 5" blade
...and there's always a story.
This was a gift from a favorite uncle when I was 12-13. I was proud of it and remember taking it with me in the summer of 1965 when I worked on a ranch in McClusky, ND. We were setting barbed wire fences and the hand used the pommel to beat down a piece of wire. I remember being devastated when he returned it with deep gouges in the metal. I guess it added character. Funny the little things we remember.

Nice work, very nice indeed.
Back when, it was common to have a Japanese Tanto razored each side, sheath affixed
upside down on the TA-50 webbing. No bolt just blade razor but the finest steel.
Pick up Hong Kong on R&R. Leave to a buddy or even a Kit Carson ex-Cong.

Looking back, the best blade work was the Sykes-Fairbairn Second World War 1st Special Forces
issue with thumbprint grooved blade and metal pommel spike. I'd have liked Chicago iron
brass knuckles welded on, for any steel-fist knock down dragout. That was one helluva soldier.

I think it's to reduce the weight of the knife. The blade is already pretty heavy.
I've been told the hole in the blade is so that the knife can be converted into a bayonet.
The hole (size and shape) in the knife is to attach the scabbard to , so it converts into a wire cutter. Note where the serrations are on your knife and compare to the attached pix. If your scabbard doesn't look like the pix, you were robbed.
Also the hole in the bolster, won't fit any rifle I know of, so as a bayonet it's pretty useless
