After half a year, I ended up pulling the trigger on the High Notch G-1 that was sitting on Yahoo Auctions. The seller was dropping the price every few weeks and my curiosity got the better of me.
Attached some pics & I'm quite happy with the build quality. I've also placed my Rainbow Country G-1 on the left for comparison.
Wall of text below with my initial impressions.
The leather's definitely shinki with the distinctive floral fragrance. It's on the thicker side, I'd estimate a bit over 1.3 mm (the RC is ~1.1 mm iirc). The leather is similar to the Real McCoy's Nelson jacket whereas RC is smoother & glossier.
The High Notch doesn't have a size label but was listed as XL by the seller (they noted it might be a custom order and later revised their description to "L-XL"). I'd say the size is more like an American 42. It feels a bit tighter around the shoulders than the RC (44) even though the measurements are similar on paper. The RC action back is a lot more mobile and I don't think that'll change even after breaking in the High Notch (the RC pattern is simply more flexible).
The cuffs are thicker/rougher than RC and the waistband is thinner; no complaints about the knit quality. I'm also pleasantly surprised by the mouton collar. The wool looks shoddy in photos but it's dense and soft (I like it more than the RC collar).
The zipper is Conmar (same as the RC), nice and sturdy. The only minor complaint I have is about the lining, which feels too thin and loose for my liking. No idea if it's for historical accuracy but the lining seems like it could tear easily if it gets caught on something.
All in all, I'd agree with the thread that High Notch is up there in quality and on par with the other more renowned Japanese brands I've handled (Rainbow Country, Real McCoy's, The Flat Head). It's tricky to get a sense of the sizing though since there's not much info online, but hopefully this post helps other folks who are curious about the quality.
