Golden Age honeymoon destinations

Me and my wife to be are planning our honeymoon. We live in the UK and will be traveling overseas.

We're thinking about places involving a degree of dressing up, whether in formal or travel clothing. Although we've a couple of locations in mind — New York and northern India are winning out at the moment — I'd be interested in hearing suggestions for Golden Age-type honeymoon destinations.

My grandparents Honeymooned in Turner Falls, Oklahoma, which I'm sure was lovely back then but is considerably less fashionable now, or at least it was on my last trip up there. Not a lot to dress up for, either, but the scenery is pretty nice.

If you're thinking about the South West, the Bass Hall is a lovely Art Deco inspired building with fabulous performances all year long. Not necessarily FROM the Golden Era, but definitely inspired, and definitely a place to dress up in your finest.

You might consider a Batista-ruled Cuba, which I'm sure was a favorite location for the Golden Era wealthy. I'm not sure how rewarding a Castro-ruled Cuba is today, and I'm sure you'd have to fly in from another country...with a doctored passport.

Or perhaps Paris? Or a safari through South Africa?

How about a drive down Route 66? That will take you past some really great Golden Era spots and I'm sure there were a few couples that used that as a honeymoon.

Why not try Yellowstone Park, or Mt. Rushmore? Or any of the national parks? Those were probably likely destinations for some thrifty honeymooners.

Niagra Falls... of course! Made all the more memorable for the future Mrs CP by my stirring rendition of "Honolulu Baby" on a uke.

That's as near to O'ahu as she's likely to get...

The Poconos used to be the Golden Age honeymoon spot. Heart shaped everything and the place is / was DEDICATED to honeymooners!

Destination

I might suggest the city of Savannah, Georgia. My wife and i honeymooned there about 6 months ago.. I had traveled there alot while on business over the last few years and only managed to snag my wife and drag her along a little over one year ago. The history in that town is mind boggling. You can stay on Tybee Island in abed and breakfast and learn some of the history (we did) and then drive in on the causeway in the morning after wandering the beach. (It's quieter even during the tourist season because it's where the Savannah folks summer/winter).. Not nearly as busy as places that have spring break type crowds (ick!) You go into the historic downtown area and they have trolleys which give you the backdrop thru the historic district anyou can hope on and off at several different places, see the sights, do a walking or ghost tour... Eat.... (I did that alot)... It's just absolutely gorgeous and filled with so much history. I've been there 3 times in the last 12 months... My wife and I will eventually buy a place there.. But I've still got about 15 years till i can retire. You really can't go wrong there.. Just my .02.

Many folks were too poor for honeymoons.
My paternal grandparents took the train (my grandfather worked for the Louisville & Nashville) to Yellowstone from New Orleans in 1930. My maternal grandparents didn't go anywhere, I don't believe. They had to work (1926)

Another friend's parents had just moved to New Orleans, or were going to move, don't remember the whole story. Their honeymoon was at a motel which is now only about a mile from where they've lived for over 50 years. Right on US 61, it's still open, but it's more of a no-tell, motel, now.

My grandparents were married in the mid-forties and honeymooned on Mackinac Island. I believe the Grand Hotel has a dress code for dinner. I'm sure my grandparents didn't stay at the Grand Hotel -- it is very expensive.

Why not stay local and holiday at Burgh Island. We had part of our honeymoon there. It's sublime. take the Noel Coward Suite. The mermaid rockpool is perfect for the woollen bathing costume, and also for hypothermia (A voice came from the cliff as I readied myself: "Dear God he's actually going in").

The eccentric owner was delighted with our leather luggage and black tie is compulsory in the evening.

With luck a fellow guest may even get murdered during your visit and you'll get to meet the "little grey cells" first hand.

the cocktails were so large and potent that the barkeep would look after them for you, until later, when the spinning had receeded.

After my grandparents were married, they traveled to a fancy movie theater in the city and watched "Gone with the Wind."
Then they went home.
That might sound simple, but my grandparents raved about how wonderful it was.
Sounds very romantic to me.
