Dishpan Hands - Vintage Remedy

I am fanatical about using gloves...and I use the heavy duty blue ones (True Blues or Blue-ettes, I think they are called). That way I can use the really hot water to wash the dishes too. My great grandmother had beautiful hands all of her life. She used to periodically take lemon juice and salt and rubbed it all over her hands and wrists and then rinsed off and put on a thick hand cream. I think she used Paquin's but any heavy cream would be good.

When I know I'm going to do tons of dishes (say after a party), I do the above treatment, then put on cotton gloves and THEN put on my blue gloves and go to town. After the dishes, my hands are soft and smooth as a baby's behind! Who said chores had to be bad for your hands?

There's a new dishsoap out from Dawn, called Hand Renewal Plus. It has a lotion effect to it. It is almost like a beauty treatment instead of drudgery and I actually like to do the dishes now. And the dishes are still as squeaky clean as ever. Not sure how it works, but it does. And I use HOT water, so my hands were always a mess. But this stuff works and it's inexpensive and you can pick it up at your local grocer.

Apparently drinking a lot of water also helps with your hands. It mends the dryness within your skin, or so Ive read.

where can I find the True Blue(ette) gloves??

Hi Miss Leah, Are they at the grocers, or only at drugstores? Also, do you have a good source for the cotton gloves, I can't find the all cotton out here. I saw your avatar address said you were in the East Bay. I've been using hot water too and its wrecking my hands. I always keep a lotion bottle in the car. But need extras for at the kitchen sink and at the bathroom sinks.

I tried this and it ate my hands alive...What gives?
I've been sticking to the free and clear type stuff and they are a bit better, but my hands always look like hell. I'm just an avid hand washer with an over-active bladder...thus, my hands suffer.

I usually have to swtich handcreams between winter and summer. For winter I like a nice thick cream to wear when it gets bitterly cold.

For summer I love Crabtree and Evelyn's Rosewater hand cream, it smells divine!

As for doing the dishes, I always wear thick rubber gloves but I think I might try the handcream and then cotton and then rubber goves next time, it sounds great!

My hands are in TERRIBLE shape.

I work a lot with paper (making boxes, wrappings, cases, etc. for books) and old books, so my hands get filthy in a matter of minutes. Which means I'm washing them with harsh public restroom soap at least once an hour. On top of that, I'm in sculpture right now working with plaster, so my hands are dry, dry, dry! I don't know what to do other than carry lotion around with me and hope it gets the job done.

In the morning my hands look so nice and lovely, but by the end of the day they are dry little paws!

Do you have cotton archival gloves handy? They make excellent sleep gloves -- rub up with lotion at night and then sleep with them on. It's not a cure-all, but it does help.

I am horrible about forgetting to use gloves. I do keep some Corn Huskers lotion next to the sink. I keep it in a glass 1970's Avon pump bottle that looks like an ear of corn.

well, after years of singing the glories of wearing rubber gloves whilst washing dishes, i seem to have developed a sensitivity to the lining material, so now i just buy detergent that is made for sensitive skin and forgo the gloves.my hands were a mess.Now, my new song is lotion, lotion, lotion.bottles of it all over the house.anytime my hands touch water, i slather them in lotion.

I've been wanting to try those. WHere do you find them? I've been also wanting cotton gloves (with the UV rating) that asian women have been known to use. I know I stated this someonewhere else, but man, I wish I could find them.

I've always worn rubber gloves for washing up and cleaning as my Mum did. She gets dermatitis terribly if she doesn't. Also we always used really hot water so you basically *had* to wear gloves. It is a habit and I wouldn't dream of not wearing them now.

I say, Gloves are Great.
