Help Identify this Miliary Jacket

Hey Guys and Gals,

Here's another thrift store mystery:



It's a light khaki colored, heavy cotton jacket, with that old fabric feel that comes with a long storage. It's a button up front hidden by a flap. The buttons are dark greenish plastic -- almost have a bakelite feel.





The elbows are reinforced...



and the cuffs have unique tab loops.



There are no tags or markings except for some light hand writing inside the collar that looks like it says "Small" which is about right.

Is this a military jacket or a hunting jacket? It seems pretty basic and utilitarian for a piece of commercial clothing. However, I'm hoping one of the forum members out there has seen this before. Thanks in advance!

Almost looks like a shooting jacket with those elbows, though it doesn't have a padded shoulder.

Yeah, that German shirt is close -- but this isn't HBT and the buttons are way different. Cuffs are different, too.

Shooting shirt; I've never seen a military uniform like that. I assure you that, for once, I am right.

Sorry gents, this is a spanish military jacket.
It was worn by the spanish army during the seventies to mid-eighties, may be even from late sixties.
I know well those jackets or overshirts, as they were very common on flea markets. I had two which I wore very often for camping and outdoor activities with the boy-scouts before the arrival of polar-tec fleece into our lives.
Is interesting that they don't have lower pockets like the working trousers only had cargo pockets because it was meant that soldiers should not tuck their hands in the pockets since this gives a poor and little militar impression
They were outdated when the fully integration of Spain in NATO military structure and woodland camo rip-stop garments came into regulation.

I can attest that this is, indeed, a Spanish Army jacket. It was called "chupita". I wore one like that myself; the one in the pics looks somewhat faded, but not much.

I served in 1986-87, Infantry. At the time, the commonly issued pattern was a slightly more modern one (also without skirt pockets IIRC) in what was called "NATO Green", but the earlier pattern was sometimes still around (and was appreciated also because of its "old salt" appearance bonus ). In fact, I wore the NATO Green items at first, but managed to acquire and wear the earlier pattern when I had some sort of "veteran" status, plus one or two chevrons, and could get away with such fantasies, which were frowned upon but tolerated unless for the more official occassions

When the old pattern could not be found (it was already pretty scarce), an alternative was to take the NATO green items and artificially fade them by means of bleach, in order to try to imitate the much less vivid green of the old uniforms. This could result in "interesting" colours... I once wasted a perfectly good jacket by this means, it becoming a sickly yellow!

The NATO Green pattern was starting to be substituted by another one, in woodland camo; at the time of my service, only élite-style units had those.

Indeed, a Spanish military jacket. I have one and have had it for a few decades. Nice jacket, though it was originally made with only the top 'half' to be buttoned (the bottom half sewn in). I had mine altered by me Mum about 20 years ago to button all the way like a shirt. Still have it and wear it camping. Good material, I have to say. The trousers that went with it were rather unique in that they did not have front 'slash' pockets at all. Something to do with Franco not liking persons to be standing around with their hands in their pockets.

Incidentally, I believe the old (I mean real) Banana Republic of the early 80s carried this.

That they did and I had a pair / / New old stock surplus as I recall . .. No front slash pockets but they did have a reinforced butt done with the same concentric stitching . . .so much so that it looked like a target . .and yes in high school everyone wanted to kick it . . . Cool pants tho
