Hi, Ladies - Anthropoligie ring a bell?

Hello ladies!

I was talking to a girl-friend of mine the other day, about vintage clothing and the era, and she showed me a store she enjoys shopping at, called Antrhopologie. A lot of their stuff is based on vintage clothing, like, especially some of the aprons they sell.

I was wondering if that store is popular amongst you gals? I wish there was such a rich vintage-based store for men!

Here's an example of one of their aprons, that I think would look really great on my girlfriend.. (That is, when I find another girlfriend! lol)

My sister is crazy obsessed with their store. Their housewares are more "vintage-y" then their clothes. i would describe some of their clothes as "trendoid" just really trendy pieces that will be "out" next year. They have really nice knobs though, for doors and all, and i saw some cute bathing suits but they are VERY EXPENSIVE maybe just here in canada, but i don't really think that 8-16 dollars for one door handle is right! That's crazy! and if you had to do an entire dresser or something...sheesh.

I also find that their clothing doesn't fit the curvier girl. Their pants may say 12 but they don't fit like any 12 i own.

Anthropologie is expensive everywhere. I've been to their stores here in Toronto, in New York, and in Santa Monica and the only thing I ever end up buying is perfume (good selection and fair prices). The rest of the stuff is nice, but just far overpriced. The quality isn't even that great!

They are also owned by Urban Outfitters who have a dirty habit of ripping off artists, so I don't know if you would really want to support a shady company like that [huh]

Have you tried Lee Valley for knobs & handles? They have great vintage repro stuff.

Oh yes, I get more excited for the Lee Valley christmas catalog then the sears ones! lol I want to get some knobs for my waterfall set, but i would need 2 on each drawer as they have the wide handles. i would need like... 10 knobs for the vanity and 20 or 24 for the chest of drawers...we'll see i guess.
i didn't know they were owned by urban outfitters. I've never had a problem with urban outfitters, just that i find them overpriced. I'm going back there this weekend to buy a crosely clock radio for my bedroom. it's expensive, but just too much of what i'm looking for to pass it up.

Yes, Anthropolgie has sizing issues. I would classify them as vintage inspired, particularly fabric pattern choice (but not quality, they use cheap fabrics) but the cuts are generally very trendy targeting 20-somethings age group. For example their full skirts are indeed full, but they are far too short to be considered good vintage repro.

The clothes are cute to look at, but I personally would not purchase any.

Sadly Roots is another one that simply takes small time artists work and reproduces it as their own, making thousands off of someone elses work. Most artists can't afford the legal fees of fighting it (as what happened with my friend's art who Roots flat out stole) so the companies continue to get away with it. It's a terrible cycle.

I have one sweater from Anthropologie that I bought two years ago. It's listed as an XL, but the fit more like a medium. The quality of the sweater was fine (Moth brand, I don't know if that's their own branding or not). We don't have one around here so I don't shop there - but I do get their catalog for the shoes!

I once subscribed to Anthro's paper catalogue, as the photographs and sets are eye candy. Funny how their website is a direct contradiction, showing apparel on minimal dress forms in a very cookie-cutter style.
The prices are far beyond my range (even if I had a budget like that for wardrobe, I'd be more likely to drop my dollars on real vintage), but I do find some visual stimulation there.

The parent company is Urban Outfitters Inc., and they also own Free People and Urban Outfitters.

Anthropologie is indeed eye candy - they have frequent sales online and excellent customer service. They sell some great shoes, but many are full price and have already been out and about elsewhere for some time and are already on sale at other places. Their housewares are eclectic and the door knobs and pulls are unique. Prices on pulls can range from $2.99 to $16.00 - quite a shock to this nearsighted customer who thought her two pull would be $12 and rang up at $32. Oops, no thank you!

I'd describe the clothing as more modern, but with a nod to vintage. I have to say though, I'm very much tired of seeing the baby-doll, puff sleeved and back tied tops they've carried for a few years now.

I LOVE Anthro, even if i can't afford the clothes, i just love wandering around in the store to see the way they do their displays,
I nearly always find things i need in the sale corner of the store. I have bought hair accessories, perfume, soaps, aprons, and other things from here.

I am completely with you there - If something catches my eye that is not in the sale section, I will patiently wait until it is. I have no other choice!

The new Toronto location in Yorkville is way better than the original Don Mills one, but I have to agree about the sizing and quality issues. It's like a vintage Le Chateau - Amazing eye candy, but shabbily made. I'm a petite lady, and I find myself trying on mediums and larges. It always makes me wonder what the average and curvy girls do.

we go home and cry...just kidding. I usually avoid shops like anthropologie, hollister, and urban outfitters (except for home stuff) because i leave the store feeling horribly about myself and my curves. I spent 3 days wallowing in self pity because i couldn't fit into an XL one day. Its not that i don't go into Anthro to look around and drool on things i can't afford to buy. But i find myself leaving there and just wanting to go home. One time, i found the most awesome pair of sailor pants at anthro in a size 12 but couldn't get them past mid thigh.

Amen to that sister! I know that feeling all to well! So many times I have picked up 4-5 things to try on, enter a dressing room, and then seconds later just walk out giving my Husband 'the look'. I don't even look at pants in Anthro, it will be a total cry fest in the dressing room.

About 3 months after having my baby I had this great idea to trek into Anthro to try on clothes. Worst. Idea. Ever.

That being said, I do enjoy (okay, love) the store quite a bit, though I (try to) only buy things when they go on sale (or that time when I randomly found a dress I was looking for in a discount store, it was a great day!). I love the aprons they have and they have the cutest dresses.

When those feeling arise, we should run home and put on the best fitting dress we own and do a little twirl!

I buy things there occasionally, always from the sale section. There is plenty of trendy stuff there to slog through, but there are gems sometimes. I find that the things I do buy there get worn to death.

I go in there mostly to look or browse through the sale section, most of the fully priced stuff is too expensive.
