That sounds like the sweatband on my Campdraft that crumpled when I tried to pull the wire. Here's a photo of a not yet even broke in Akubra Tablelands. You can see a little twinkle of a brass ferrule holding the ends of the steel wire together. The wire I pulled was the exact same stuff used...
I didn't realize Akubra used steel wires as the reed. I have never stripped down an Akubra. I have refurbished lots of vintage hats that had an actual organic reed used as the 'reed' . But most often it is the plastic filament. You can likely purchase some of this filament along with the...
...if you are between sizes.
If you also want it for rain protection, then a fur model with a wind cord might be your best option. The Akubra Campdraft has a wind cord. Problem is, it also has a medium-sized brim which will catch in the wind; but again if you get one with a tight fit and use...
The Campdraft is the only model that I’m aware of that comes with a wind trolley. It won’t keep it on your head, just from blowing away. Some of their western styles may come with stampede strings but I’m unaware. They could be added. Pull it down snug.
That’s a great hat, and to me, a great choice that meets all your criteria. I know the felt is a bit heavy, but it should hold up well to the rigors of your trip. I always hate trying to decide which one (or if I have room, two) hats to take for trips.
I'm following you around @belfastboy, you and @tjones. I'm pulling steel wires, Akubra spring steel wires. My Campdraft sweat could not survive the pulling of the wire. Play taps. I'm stripping it down
...Asia is tough on lids so whichever goes with has to hold up well under heat and rain, be fun to wear, and be replaceable.
This heritage fawn Fed IV does fit all those criteria. Also under consideration is the silverbelly Campdraft, the modern Premier Stratoliner, or just going with a canvas hat.
Weekly shopping in a silverbelly Campdraft.
Grilling some chicken thighs in my regular barbecue hat, the Akubra Cattleman.
I wanted a non-tomato based sauce, so went for a tweaked Carolina Gold mustard based sauce. So good! I’ll be making this sauce regularly for pork and chicken.

By the way Ill throw this out here... Theres a nice looking 59cm Campdraft in Bluegrass on ebay right now. Also a light Grey Bogart in 55cm (Id never seen a Bogart in a light color like that... only one Ive got is black)
...quickly.
A cold wind during my walkabout had me sport'n a cap. Brrrr.
Now on to fedoras! The rain started as forecast after I got home. My morning coffee is enjoyed under the brim of an Akubra Campdraft. This bluegrass fedora is a TFL special make-up with a 2.5" brim.
Cheers, Eric -
...hats". I've been seeing them around, fir felts, wool felts, straws.
I've been thinking about how to resurrect a well worn and shrunken Campdraft. Hmmm...
I think that is a great upside of buying an inexpensive hat like the Campdraft....made to be worn and abused. When you have worn it out, celebrate the journey and buy a new one.
...it's a lovely hat!
I would be open to trade for something in a size 60.
Hoping to find a Stetson or something like an Akubra Fed IV or Campdraft for my soon to be growing collection.
Otherwise, will part from it (to a Lounger) for $65 USD ($100 AUD) + shipping. I have a hat box and can...
Thanks!
Yes, it's similar to the Akubra Campdraft and with an open crown. I asked for a cattleman bash for something different and really like it (they said as soon as they did it another customer saw it and wanted one too)
