I saw this thread a couple of days ago and was going to mention Flight of the Phoenix's omission and just ran out of time! Great minds think alike...;)
Jimmy Stewart made so many great movies. Vertigo is another favorite of mine.
I just read a really wonderful book about his wartime...
Too cool!
My Dad made a "fighter" for me to play in when I was a little kid(it was supposed to be an F4U Corsair) and it had an old tennis racquet handle for a joystick and some gauges mounted in it. It was just a wooden box, really;)
Neat thing was he wired a "trigger" to the...
What a powerful, thought provoking thread we have here.
Everyone has expressed themselves so beautifully and with such obvious heartfelt conviction. Where do I stand on this? I think ultimately it is up to the people of Rhode Island to decide how or if they want to celebrate the day...
I watched a neat documentary last night on TCM about Lana Turner. I believe it was called 'Lana Turner: A Daughter's Memoir' and it was quite illuminating. Although I had often enjoyed Lana's movies, especially the sultry The Postman Always Rings Twice, I'd never really known very much about her...
Thanks, Feraud. I also think another thing that makes that point very well is all the times you see an actor light a cigarette in the old movies and take a drag and throw it away. Somebody made that point earlier in regards to John Wayne. That's something that doesn't happen often in real life...
I think Andykev's points about tough guys and disdain were right. Also, I think the convenience of just throwing the cigarette or match down versus having to put an ashtray in the set or reach for one, etc. should not be forgotten. Just like you don't often see people say, "goodbye" on the...
Yeah, I agree it's a great movie, especially for us loungers in love with the era.
What's not to like about the movie? Great script and story, wonderful acting from the stars and the supporting cast, wonderful 40s style.
I never get tired of watching this one.
Good luck on your project, looks good. I made a short B&W noir homage in a film class in college years ago and it was tons of fun to make.
We used filterless smokes, btw(luckies,) and my boss at the campus TV station played my gumshoe quite well, I think, and managed to look convincing even...
I finally got around to watching Downfall and it really is amazing.
Bruno Ganz is just incredible in the role of Hitler and the film captures the nightmare quality of the final days in Berlin very well. If you still haven't seen this one, check it out.
I think the "humanity" of Ganz's...
Another "oldie but goodie" is 'Secret Agents, Spies, and Saboteurs- Famous Undercover Missions of World War II' by Janusz Piekalkiewicz. I read it years ago as a library book but recently got my own copy from amazon, I think. The book has twenty seven chapters as diverse as the special...
I just wanted to chime in that John's CD is well worth the money. I bought mine last year and it is just superb. Tons of great photos of original and repro jackets and a wonderful resource for collectors.
Paddy, by the way those are some great looking A2s you have there my friend. I...
Speaking of sub movies, I took a tour last week in Oahu while on vacation of the USS Bowfin. The Bowfin is a WWII US Balao class submarine at Pearl Harbor that had a great war record. As a sub movie buff, my first tour of an actual WWII submarine was really great.
Here's one pic of the bow...
I'm torn on this one. Love it for the reasons jake mentioned, but agree it's not the greatest flick ever made for the reasons mud mentioned. Good action flick, though. The clothes and cars and such are pretty cool, too.
One of the classic books on the period was John Toland's "The...
Great thread...
Many of my favorites have already been mentioned: Stalag 17, The Great Escape, From Here To Eternity, The War Lover, Hell Is For Heroes, The Longest Day, Twelve O'Clock High, Das Boot. I really liked The Sands of Iwo Jima when I was a kid.
On the lighter side I've...
Wow, he was always good. I really liked him in "Twelve Angry Men" and "From Here to Eternity" also. He starred in a Twilight Zone episode that was a classic, too. Forget the episode title, but in it he was marooned on a desolate planet as a punishment for murder and is given a robot female...
Great story.
My favorite story of estimating the numbers of the enemy was the US estimate of Japanese forces on Tarawa (actually Betio island on Tarawa atoll.)
Basically the intelligence guys looked at the number of latrine facilities and used a formula to predict how many enemy...
The Old Breed
I agree with Baggers that the LRDG and Popski's group and the SAS have always seemed like "romantic" outfits due to their independence and the fact they operated behind enemy lines in the western desert.
Any of the flying units in the ETO are fascinating to me, as well as the...
