    Modern "vintage" reads?

Thanks, gentlemen, I appreciate the input. Swing was a fun book. I'll have to try Eddie Muller. Never heard of him. Cool.

Why you shouldn't rely on technology

Don't know where it was, but I saw an article in the paper that said a college class was given the challenge of giving up the internet, cell phones, etc. for a week. Not a one passed.

    Ghost world?

OK, I'm old. So I'm trying to figure out what this all means. The myspace, facebook, connectivity is altering the perception of "friends." Even the FL kind of reminds me of roaming around a ghost world. Disconnected voices floating around a mental bar. Don't get me wrong, I obviously see some...

    Documentaries

Don't know if you can really call it documentary, it's probably more of a high-brow reality show, but I love the PBS Frontier House, 1890 House, etc. Such a kick to watch people who think they want to live in the past, actually get to live in the past.

    The Sounds Of War

Can't speak first hand, fortunately, but my father who was in seven campaigns in Europe in WWII said the noise during the Battle of the Bulge was just a constant series of explosions and concussions. He talks about the Germans who surrendered white with fear, shaking and teeth chattering. You...

Can a man appreciate vintage and be metro?

You have a point, Pigeon Toe, especially when discussing individuals. But whether nature or nurture there are differences in the genders as groups. To ignore that is to miss one of life's real pleasures, I think. However, most individuals I know can't be stereotyped and there is pleasure in...

    Golden Era Passtimes / Hobbies

I have a thousand or so stereoviews. The original 3-D. I onlycollect city views since nature changes so little.

    Modern "vintage" reads?

I've been reading White Shadow by Ace Atkins. It's set in Tampa in 1955. He does a tremendous job of recreating the feel for the time and place. He took a real crime and fictionalized it much like Max Allan Collins used to do so well. I was wondering if anyone else is doing anything similar with...

    modern things you haven't experienced

Call it kismet. I was just listening to Fibber McGee from 4/17/45 when I began to read this thread and they were waxing nostolgic over telephones that were boxes on the wall instead of the new-fangled hand sets. Maybe next generation will be longing for the days cell phones were handheld instead...

Where did your user name come from??

I know there are other sites but I use otrcat.com for radio shows. They list the shows by title and broadcast date. It's cheap, $5 MP3 which sometimes has 50 shows or so. As for magazines, I lean toward ebay, but a cheap way is to find a inexpensive subscription to Time and that allows you...

Your Favorite Years? What time period do you follow?

1939 - I wonder what it would have been like to drive from one world's fair to the other pre-freeway. It's fantasy but what the hecks wrong with that.

Where did your user name come from??

My hobby is following other years day for day. Currently I am following 1945 since that year and this one mesh up (Apr. 14 is Saturday in both years). I read the magazines, listen to the radio shows, etc. Anyway, I couldn't really think of what else to call it so I call it parallel history and...

    Anybody still read the Newspaper?

Enjoy hiding in my office at lunch with the daily paper. It allows me to avoid talking to others - which I do enough the rest of the day. Plus it's too difficult to read the comics on line.

    A Culture of Snark

I guess I think it depends on whose ox is being gored. Political edginess (snarkiness), I have a tolerence for. It's an expression of frustration and free speech that allows us to non-violently communicate. Those of us who feel marginalized need an outlet that perhaps draws a little blood...

Women in WWII waiting on their Soldiers

Good point, Tourbillion. The sad romantic stories both strike the romantic in us and are more socially acceptable than the other stories.

Women in WWII waiting on their Soldiers

I don't know, maybe I'm full of hot air, but I think the Ruth's of the world were rare. Human nature is built on resiliancy and practically anyone who has survived into their 20s has had to bounce back from one tragedy or another. And maybe losing someone before you really had a chance to find...

    What Are You Reading

Have been working my way through A Long Way Gone by Ismael Beah. It's a memoir of a boy soldier in Sierra Leone. Only 229 pages, I still can only take it in short bits before it becomes too oppressive. A worthwhile read, well-written, but chilling.

    Sometimes vintage is just ...

All you need do is remove a row of computers and there's the space. I'll give you the pain to update. My point is that too often technology takes on a life of its own and the possible becomes the ought to without stopping by the should we. By the by, my shoes are firmly on my feet. Thanks...
