    Akubra hemp braids

Well, the Akubra Casablanca arrived today. It's a great little hat: it's extremely light, it has a very stingy brim, and a very wide weave that allows quite a lot of light through. I wondered whether it would cut out enough glare. While it cuts out much less than, say, the Capricorn, it's still...

    Akubra hemp braids

Ah, okay! I was just going through their catalog. The right link should have been: http://www.australiangear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_94&products_id=309 Yes, the Reef and the Range look the same, except for the vents. "Range" is a bad name for googling, I always get "for a...

    Akubra hemp braids

This is an old thread that I found looking for info and reviews on the Akubra Range, which is a fairly wide brimmed (83cm, or about 3.5 in) hemp straw hat with vents, quite solid. Looks pretty perfect for a hat to wander along the beach or through a forest with. Can't find practically anything...

    Cuenca vs. Montecristi

I asked PB his advice regarding Cuenca vs. Montecristi at the same price level. His advice was if I was looking for semi calado (ventilated crown), stick to Montecristi. He didn't say why, but I'm going to follow his advice.

    "interior Coolmax® sweatband"

Looking through hat vendors' websites, I see occasional references to an "interior Coolmax® sweatband", usually on products intended specifically for sports use or in very hot climates. I wiki-ed "coolmax" to discover that it's one of these magical, new fangled pyroplastic materials. I remember...

    Cuenca vs. Montecristi

Nice! I probably will go with the Montecristi for the first one, and maybe get a Cuenca as a second, some time in the future. By the way, I get that the very best Montecristi are far better hats than the Cuenca can ever be. But I'm still wondering about a comparison of the two at roughly the...

    Cuenca vs. Montecristi

Thanks, BR Gordon. Is that the PB Panama you are wearing in your avatar picture?

    Cuenca vs. Montecristi

I've been looking at Panama Bob's website for a hat in the 3 - 400 dollar range. In that range, I could get either Montecristi Extra Fino hat Blocked USA OR Fino-Fino Cuenca. So, if you were buying your first panama from PB in the range, which one would you choose and why?

Ask a question, get an answer

Yes, that sounds right. The images of the semi colado that I've seen do not have vented brims. So, "colado" is Spanish for vented?

Ask a question, get an answer

What is semi calado? I've been looking at Panama Bob's site and a few others, so I guess it has something to do with the ventilation patterns that I've seen in all the images. Can anyone help out and give me something more specific. Google turns up heaps of examples, but not a specific...

    The Curse of Indiana Jones

Most mornings, I get up at around five or six and go for a long walk through the back lanes of inner city Jakarta. I usually wear my Akubra Capricorn. Almost every time I go out, I get people calling me "Cowboy". Seriously, the Akubra Capricorn is not a cowboy hat. I guess most people in the...

Ask a question, get an answer

I did a search for reviews of the Akubra Casablanca, one of their very few stingy brimmed options, but I couldn't find anything. When I was in Australia, I was looking more for something with a wider brim and ended up with the Capricorn. Still and all, stingy brims have their place and I'd like...

    Introduction

Greetings! and thanks to all old members here, from whom I've got some great information from lurking on this forum. I'm quite new to good hats. I live in the equatorial tropics of SEAsia and as far as I'm concerned, wearing SOMETHING on your head when you step outside is more or less...
