He usually wore a plain old single-breasted trench coat in dark grey or black. Nothing special about it as far as I can recall.
Was that the 50's blue gab DB suit with the really narrow waist? I was going to take a chance on that but changed my mind. I've been the victim of too many people who don't know how to measure.
It should work out ok. Lapels are on the small side and the armholes seem pretty big though to the average person it should convey the basic look you're after.
Brown fedora will work.
One thing you should do is get a nice real vintage tie. They're cheap and it will make the whole outfit...
Also, when shopping for vintage on ebay, don't rely on size alone. Always ask for the actual measurement around the sweatband. Sizes can vary and sometimes hats have been stretched.

I love saddle shoes & currently own three pairs. I have a pair of the Dexter Campus and can recommend them. Great looks, very comfortable and construction is pretty decent for shoes under $100. There are other colors available if you order direct...
I couldn't find any info on Brentano shoes anywhere... might be a house brand. You might want to email that place and ask how the soles compare.

You have a great point, and I would have done the whole thing. However, the area I worked on doesn't appear clean at all -- it looks dull, like the grosgrain has lost its sheen. Almost like I used sandpaper on the thing. It's very obvious under bright light.
Anyway, there is at least one...
Well, I gave it a shot, starting out with just plain water. Unfortunately I didn't get the stain out and the area I worked on is now discolored/faded. :(
So looks like I'll have to junk the ribbon anyway. I just hope I can find a close enough match, as I really love the color combination on...
