Yes, this was an inexpensive hat. Not vintage. As I pointed out above, it was 55 euro, shipped from Amazon. Seems as if the price was about right, or a bit low.

Is it a sign of quality, or the opposite? It was just pointed out to me by Mr. Enzo that the hatband says "Montecristi" — does that seem accurate, judging from the photo? (I'd assumed Cuenca at this price.)

Question: has anyone ever experienced this? The Equal Earth hat seems to incorporate two kinds of weave: I've looked closely, and it seems to me that you see BOTH llano and brisa weaves, in alternating rings. The outer edge of the brim is llano, then there's a ring of brisa, then the side of...

Right. I promised a photo of the Equal Earth, now adorned with a Borsalino ribbon. I think it worked out well. Of course the crown doesn't seem quite as tall, but I still like the shape a lot.

Well, I'm having fun. I cannibalized an old Borsalino Peluche (because I don't live north of the Arctic circle, and never have reason to wear a thick furry fedora); the ribbon's complex and gorgeous, with a three-ring bow, so I've transferred it to the Panama. Pictures to follow. Question...

Just how damaging is rain to a Panama hat? I was assuming (hoping) that if you let it dry properly, it would be fine. Not the case?

Right. I'm going to alert them to this page; maybe it will inspire them to stock up. And Tropicalbob: that's good to know about rolling. Kind of makes sense. When I finally buy a $50,000 Montecristi, I won't try that trick of pulling it through a wedding ring, or checking to see whether it...

    Panama Hat Thread

I don't know whether it's kosher to link to their site here. Doesn't really matter: just do a Google search on "Equal Earth Panama hats". They also have a Montecristi for 200 pounds—also in this natural color—and if I get addicted to this genre, I may well buy it. The hat I bought comes in...

    Panama Hat Thread

I've never reviewed a hat here, but I just bought my first Panama, and I love it. Moreover, the customer service was far above and beyond what I expected, given that it cost only 55 euro. Of course, it's not a high-end hat for this price, but it's handwoven in Ecuador from toquilla palm straw...

    WTB: Vintage Grosgrain Ribbon

According to her listings, she doesn't ship to Europe. And she can't receive messages via ebay—does anyone perhaps know another way of contacting her? Or have ideas about someone who might sell vintage grosgrain in Europe?

    WTB: Vintage Grosgrain Ribbon

Hi all, I have four hats that require ribbons. If anyone has vintage grosgrain, I'd love to purchase enough for these, and maybe a couple of others. Black is always good, but I'm open to colors. Open to any width, really. And if you have old ribbons pre-sewn with a bow—which I could just...

WTB: vintage hat ribbons, w. bow already made, 7 1/4

I need a couple of vintage grosgrain ribbons for a pair of fedoras. One is a light sage Borsalino Alessandria from the fifties, which requires the traditional thin ribbon. The other is a fifties (?) Stetson, tall, mid-brown, which needs some sort of wider ribbon. I'm open to any interesting...

FOR TRADE: Borsalino Thin Open-Road style ribbon, for fatter vintage ribbon

Looks as if I'm best to sell them to Scott, and buy a couple from another member? Are vintage ribbons easy to come by?

FOR TRADE: Borsalino Thin Open-Road style ribbon, for fatter vintage ribbon

Right. Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I've measured both ribbons from the center of the bow to the end of the ribbon (as presumably you'd want to attach the end to the center -- although you could fudge it if it were a little short, I suppose, by attaching the end to the far end of...

FOR TRADE: Borsalino Thin Open-Road style ribbon, for fatter vintage ribbon

Well I'd rather do a trade -- it's going to be impossible for me to find replacement ribbons in Mexico. But if nothing comes through, I guess I can sell them.

FOR TRADE: Borsalino Thin Open-Road style ribbon, for fatter vintage ribbon

I have a skinny grosgrain ribbon that I just removed from an older Borsalino Alessandria -- too thin for my taste. It's a light sage-green, and has a matching stretchy wind trolley (cord), with button. The ribbon is pristine, and the bow is intact -- you just have to tack it. I'm looking for...

Help needed with grosgrain ribbon installation

So, I did it. Sewed a circle, and then -- while the ribbon was damp. pulled it down over the crown. It dried perfectly: tight, unwrinkled.
