Copyright and 'sampling' has always been an issue.
Here's Glenn Miller's enormously successful (but patently 'borrowed') "In the Mood." Below that, one-armed Wingy Manone's "Tar Paper Stomp," which predates Miller's recording by 10 years.
Wingy was eventually paid-off to stop him...
Many people are not aware that classical music was inspired by jazz in the early 20th century and there were many composers that worked with the newly developing form.
Gershwin's a notable example, but there's also Stravinsky, Ravel, Copland, Shotakovich and others.
Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in...
I just stumbled across this great site that has a weekly podcast of Era British dance band music.
I've always loved the British jazz and dance music from this period because it's softer and dreamier than the American big band sound of the same period.
The host is John Wright whose show...

Having brought up mysterious, ghostly short-wave radio 'numbers stations' here...
I'm a collector of radio broadcasts (and acetates), studio outtakes, mixing desk/soundboard feeds, and generally any Era music (mostly jazz) that is either rare and only circulated amongst collectors, or hasn't even been released (and if it has then only unofficially by bootleg companies). I...
An anti "men wearing hats" column in the normally good newspaper The Guardian. The beret is particularly under attack.

My comment was: "Better an old hat wearer than a weary 'old hat' columnist"
As Countryclubjoe pointed out in his recent post, the cinematic incarnation of James Bond is now 50 years old.
Who is your favourite on-screen James Bond?
And while we're at it, what's your favourite Bond movie?
I think I will probably have to choose Sean Connery because he's so iconic, but...
I recently visited Vienna but was keen to avoid the powdered wigs and sugary Mozart industry.
Instead, like Holly Martins from the 1949 classic The Third Man starring Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton, I trawled the city for Harry Lime.
I found quite a few locations, including Harry Lime's...

I've heard it said a few times that JFK was the man who "killed the hat" after being the 1st president to take his off during his inauguration.
Do you think this single event was enough to actually "kill the hat" or were...
I can't wait to see this.
PT Anderson's thinly-veiled take on L Ron Hubbard and Scientology
There have already been a few advance screenings in the US. Has anyone seen it yet?
The photography looks beautiful.

Anyone know of any good places to find vintage hats and clothes in Munich, Germany?
I will be visiting very soon.
Any stores? stalls? Long-standing flea-markets?
Apparently, Munich has the most hat shops in Europe - there must be vintage hats hiding away somewhere!

I was quite upset to find that my favourite silk tie has frayed along one edge. The frayed, threadbare 'patch' is about half an inch long. Is there any way that I can fix this?
thanks
I'll soon be in the North West of England using Manchester as a base.
Does anyone have any recommendations for vintage clothing and hat shops in that region?
Thanks!
NEW (with tags and in the original box. It has only been worn to try on. The only reason I'm selling this is because I don't feel that it suits me.)

Vintage vs Modern Hats (also how brand names hike the price)
Maybe someone can explain to me what if anything modern hats have going for them...
In the last few of days I visited a couple of long-running hat shops where I tried on some new Stetsons and Maysers, all in the EUR 200-ish price...
I'm really quite pleased with my new hat stretcher. I've seen one of this type with a little measuring guide attached. The stretch range in size 56-61.
It's German, no idea how old - 50's/60s? Maybe newer? It looks like it has never been used. The company that made it - Riefenstahl & Co...
