I ordered one from Dirty Billy's, but not wanting to wait 12 to 16 weeks, I made the below hat from a resistol cowboy hat, so the felt is probably thicker than it ought to be. Had a alterations shop put in the stitching on the brim. Got the pin at an army surplus store. Been reading the Rise of...
Not long ago, there was an HJ for bid on ebay that was dated 1898, and it had the 38 New Bond St address on the liner/sweatband. I think before this they were at 45 Bond St. So that would put them at the 38 New Bond until 1965, when they moved to 13 Old Burlington st. Swales verified a hat I...
I worked on it a couple hours a night after work for about four days, I think. No magic, anyone could do it. I think Herbert Johnson commisioned these hats as part of the mod fashion movement in the late 60s, early 70s. Swinging London, Carnaby Street, and all that. Something Austin Powers might...
This the result of the one I bought. It is a little work. Somewhere out there are vintage shorthair Poets. Getting one like that would be a real find. Sounds like I'm talking about dachshunds.
Yep, that's the same model I pounced and made an Indy hat out of. That is a Poet, albeit the shaggy variety. I'd do it again, but only if it was already my size.
Does anyone know if a hat size 4 1/2 is indicative of an earlier form of European hat sizing? Are any charts available?
Thanks for any info in advance.
Thanks, Andy and Art. Any idea about the rather bulb-like shape?
I got this today at an antique mall. When it heats up, you can't hardly touch the metal of the shape/block part. Seems like heating it up then pulling the plug would be the way to go. I sure wouldn't want to scorch a hat. Anyroad...
Ain't it the truth. Last week I won what was advertised as a "Bogart Fedora" size 7 3/4. It is a vintage Stetson, but after measuring it, I found the size to be more like 6 7/8. It needs cleaning and there's a small hole near the top of the front pinch.
If it's Bogart, it's more like the...
Thanks for the comments. Do you know when the clear plastic was first used to protect the liner? That's what made me think this hat was possibly from the 30's; the lack of a liner protector.
Like an Optimo, you can do that bash or a center dent, whatever you wish, and yep that's the one. You came in early and I came in late on that one. I think I'm gonna Bogartize it though. Remove the bound brim and put a wide ribbon on it. Just won an auction on a "Vintage Stetson Bogart" size 7...
Vintage Borsalino
I won this hat on ebay a month ago:
The felt is very soft and pliable. Just like my Optimo Indy. It has a sewn in liner and the sweatband is sewn straight to the felt without the synthetic strip newer hats have. It has the nearly 6 inch row of corrugated material under...
Good to finally see a catalog, though the Poet and the Indy are out of stock. I thought it was posted a while back that HJ was not with SWB any longer. This would seem to dispute that. I would be tempted to get the Poet and do the Indy mods myself if I was to get another HJ, which I doubt. The...
