    1960s suit sizes

Hi. new poster. i was wondering, are 1950s suit sizes smaller than their 21st century counterparts? I have many vintage suits but very few of them have size tags. I'm wear a size 38 in contemporary suits, and i like a fairly snug fit. would a 1960s 40R work for me?
