I bought a nice newsboy-style cap a couple years ago, and liked the look but didn't wear it for long. The problem is that the material in the bill of the cap doesn't fit smoothly along my forehead. Pressure from the ends of the bill gives me a headache pretty quickly. I don't suppose that...
After thinking about it a bit, I decided what was bugging me was the big side curl and unevenness of the brim, particularly in the back. I ironed the brim flat, left the bash as it was, then patiently reworked it with just a bit of sweep up on the sides and moderate sweep down front and back...
Turns out I'm five minutes from Black Sheep Hat Works. I left a Stetson Open Road with Bob a couple days ago to be resized. When I pick it up I'll ask about options for the Snowy River, including the Stylemaster. My dilemma probaby isn't unique: play with mods and refurbs or spend a similar...
I've had an Akubra Snowy River for about 20 years (bought it from L.L.Bean way back when). It needs some attention and I'm kind of tired of the big brim curl. Any ideas about what might work in a conversion or refurb? Is there a Stylemaster hidden in there somewhere?
I'm fond of Stetson Open Road hats and I'd like to have one of mine customized for a better fit. I live in the Seattle area. Is there anyone around who does that kind of work? Optimo, in Chicago, is an option but I'd prefer someone closer to home.
Thanks,
Warren
I've had a Snowy River for years, and I'm wearing it in rotation with a Stetson Open Road and an Akubra Squatter these days. What I prefer in the other hats are the flatter brims and higher crowns. The Snowy's low crown sits on the top of my head, and the curled brim doesn't seem to provide as...
PhilS, you asked:
I sent an eBay Open Road to Optimo a month or so ago to be cleaned and blocked. Total bill was $45, including shipping. No sweatband or ribbon work, looks great, and the turnaround was pretty quick.

I wore my new Diamante panama to lunch today and got a couple nice comments from my companions. But the topper was on the way home: sitting at a traffic light, I heard someone shout "I love your hat!" Looked to my left and saw a teenage girl riding with her mom. We smiled at each other, and...
It was beautiful by late morning, but my day started at about 40 degrees. Had my Tilley's chin strap cinched down, and wore more layers than you'd expect for the last weekend in April.
The Diamante
Following the advice in this thread, I checked with Panama Bob and found that he had a Diamante in my size. I ordered it earlier this week, and when I got home from a regatta this afternoon the hat was waiting for me:
This is my first panama hat, and I couldn't be happier...
eBay baffles me. I've been looking for a nice Open Road in 7-1/8, and have been outbid on every nice one I've tried -- until today.
Here's a link to the auction: http://tinyurl.com/22z2r4
Nice looking hat, I think. Opening bid $50. I followed most of someone's advice: bid once, bid...
Open Road
This is my new Open Road, a work in progress. It's a Stetson 3X Beaver Open Road, size 7, with a price tag of $15 (I paid $16.66 on eBay, so the price has gone up a bit since it sold new). It appears to have been grazed by a herd of moths, but none have eaten all the way through...
Akubra Squatter
Today's hat is my new Akubra Squatter. The first pic shows the color well.
I tried an Indy-style bash, but settled on this teardrop style. It's a great hat for our recent snowy weather.

Warren
Thanks, fatwoul; your comment about the time frames of the two series is probably right on.
I'm a Wodehouse fan from way back, and the Jeeves & Wooster series was a visual treat -- so that's one area in which I'm not a dollar short.

I've been watching both "Jeeves & Wooster" and "Foyle's War" DVDs lately, and the difference in the hats in the two series is striking. Both Jeeves and Wooster wear really elegant hats, Jeeves usually a bowler and Wooster a variety of caps, fedoras and top hats. The characters in "Foyle's War"...
