How much can one take a garment in?

Someone mentioned cutting the seams and basically redoing the pants all over again. That seems like it should work. No? I had a great tailor who did that for me, just to tailor the legs, and it worked great. It would be expensive but it's pretty much a one time thing, at least you hope...

Which book/movie affected you the most?

Catcher in the Rye I read this book my senior year in college. I hadn't read a novel since I was about 9, yes I just scraped by in high school English. In the space of about a week 2 different people compared me to Holden, the main character in the book, so I figured why not. They were about...

What do you use to shave?

Caswell Massey apparently stopped selling the small cakes, not the 1752 stuff, the 1752 cakes don't fit in my mug. I waited and waited and finally ordered some Col. Ichabod Conk shaving soap. It's very nice stuff. I like it better than the Caswell Massey soap.

What did you used to do for fun?

Not to get all Cackalacky on everybody but I went to college at Westren Carolina University and for a while was part of this group called "Special Friends." We would pick up an elementary age kid from their school in Sylva and help them do homework then return them home in the evening. One...

What did you used to do for fun?

When I was a kid we just hung around. Riding bikes, walking, skateboards, etc. As I got older we got in more trouble stealing, vandlism, etc. We always had fun. As far as your generation being bored and spending a lot of time sitting in front of a computer. I started working on...

    Modern sources for Plus Fours

Did you say "less flamboyant"??? It would think wearing knickerbockers period would blow the flamboy-meter. Although if you're Chapel Hill noone will notice, that whole town is off the flamboy-meter.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Fedora Lounge Launches a Magazine

Can FL members get a super secret special discount? We know the "guy in charge". This really is great. I can't convince my wife to start reading FL so I'll just subscribe and just leave it in the regular places. She's always mentioning something she read in one of *my* issues of Esquire...

    Summer Mix Tape

Oh man that's great. I love putting on Jackson Browne for a long drive. That reminded me that I always put Van Morrison on the morning after while I'm cleaning the kitchen so maybe throwing in some Van would help. Thanks.

    Summer Mix Tape

Actually a cd. I'm working on the All Time Great, Wonderful, and Amazing Summer Mix Tape and I need some ideas. I am going for something you can listen to on the way to the beach, while sitting on the beach, while hiding from the sun inside. It should start off strong with the freedom and...

    Caller ID Etiquette

At home I always say "Hello!", it comes out more like "Yellow!". At work we all have the same type of phone so everybody knows I know who it is. Sometimes I say "Hey Bill" other times just "Hey". If it's someone from outside the company I say "This is Jason."

    Martini Protocol

I like them stirred because shaking bruses the gin, makes them cloudy, and makes them watery. Martinis should be clear as water.

    Martini Protocol

I drink two different kinds of martinis. One when I hve the money for Beefeater and one when I don't. If I'm out I always order Beefeater. With the good stuff, Beefeater: This is how I make them at home. Get a short glass. Throw in 2 olives or 1 peporchini pepper. Get a tall glass...

    No-Iron Shirts

I'll second Paul Fredrick. I have a bunch of their "Easy Care." I would like to include a quote from Esquire's Laws of Style: Easy Care is for those who don't. Take that with as much salt as you like.

    Handkerchiefs and Pocket Squares

I wear it differently depending on what I'm up to. If I'm going to do something calm, classy, and quiet I'll go with folded neatly and just a little showing, as described above. If I'm going to do something fun I just throw it in there. Really does look nice no matter how you wear it.
