We watched the 1940s house on DVD recently and my daughter (10) really wants to do a similar project. It should be interesting given that she is a very fussy eater...
I bought the Stitch in Time book yesterday, it's lovely! I like that they've included the original patterns in full as well as the updated versions :) I've already bought wool for "It Couldn't Fail to Please", though it looks like (from Ravelry) there are some Errata to look out for...
I love the 20s and first two 60s pics! I definitely agree with kamikat about hair colours, the stronger colours look great on you. I think the 20s pic is lovely and elegant, and the 60s pics look really fun, so I suppose it depends a bit on what you're going for :)
Ah, well there you go! *jealous of your collection* I think jersey was a bit stiffer then, as well, maybe? I have a 60s jersey dress and it's not much stretchier than a comparable-weight woven dress would have been.
I think that, for the most part, slobbing around wasn't the done thing, even...
Ooh, everyone looks fabulous in their party frocks! I'm not sure what to do about party wear this year, I've lost a lot of weight since coming off some nasty medication and I've already bought quite a few new clothes, so can't really justify a party frock as well. I have a nice little black...
I think house dresses were popular - they seem to have been generally cotton, often cheerful prints, a little 'roomier' than the average going-out type dress presumably to allow for a wider range of motion when scrubbing floors/washing windows etc. Jersey/knit fabrics such as tend to be popular...
Thanks! I totally agree about closing it up, everyone at work said it looked good open, which may or may not be true (personally I think it made me look wider...) but I definitely think it looks more vintagey this way.
Thanks :) It's the "Favorite Cardigan" pattern from Custom Knits - if you're on Ravelry the link to my project page is http://www.ravelry.com/projects/purpleanwen/favorite-cardigan which has a few notes and you can get from there to more info on the pattern/other people's projects :) It's lovely...
Nothing genuinely vintage, I'm afraid, but I think there was a certain mid-century feel to my outfit (or maybe I'm just deluded...) today, I had on a cabled, very fitted jumper that I made, with a dark brown skirt with godets and curled (ish - it never holds that well) hair and red lippy:
I'm mostly happy so long as I'm not being called Sir, that hasn't happened in a while though, but considering how, um, well-endowed I am, it happened a lot when I was a little younger... I get the occasional Madam (Ma'am isn't in general use here, it tends only to be said by butlers in plays, or...
This isn't really very vintage (the yarn's too thick, for one thing) but I love my cardigan and I think that, being very fitted, it has a certain '40s aspect:
The reason it's hanging open like that is because I could only find 3 snaps, but I couldn't wait to wear it because it's so cosy and...
If anyone wants to try out the No7 serum stuff, Boots has an almost identical product in their Botanics range http://www.boots.com/en/Botanics-First-Signs-of-Ageing-Wrinkle-Reduction-30ml_35714/ - I compared the ingredients and they are almost exactly the same, but it's much cheaper. It's really...
*waves*
Me, me, I love penpals! I used to have scads of them, in my teens. I have ADD so am sometimes a bit slow remembering to reply, but I'm lovely really ;) I'm in the UK, would particularly love to write in French or Italian (or Welsh) as I really need to practice those, but I'd like...
I've spent more than half my life in the crop-grow cycle. I've been growing it for about two and a half years now, and it's down to my bra strap at the back, yay! I have a tendency also to dye my hair black and then get fed up of it and try to bleach it out which results in hair death and...
Well, I did manage to make it out for hallowe'en, unfortunately I thought I'd left my camera at home (except I just found it lurking in a pocket of my bag, bother!) so I don't have pictures, but I did the whole 20s vamp(ire) thing.
I used some whiteface stage makeup mixed with tinted...
I've also got the whole mismatched-brows thing going on:
I kind of like it, though sometimes (like in the colour pic!) it does look a bit like I'm doing the whole Roger Moore one-raised-eyebrow look ;) which sadly I can't actually do.
(Excuse the uneven makeup, I was experimenting with...
Fabulous, I tried looking on the Sally website for UK branches, but got horribly confused by their stupid website, which claims they have NO STORES in the UK. Thanks!
