It was $

I was wearing my very beautiful Montecristi Fedora, straw. Someone came up to me and greatly admired the very, very, fine super weave, shape and ivory color. They couldn't believe how nice the hat was. Then, out of rudeness, they asked bluntly "How much was that hat?". (An American tradition, asking the price of everything, I guess!)

I calmly replied, "Oh this hat is worth about $3000. But I got it for only $1000"

They almost dropped dead.

Yep. Paid a cool thousand for a fine, primo hat. It was worth it. I won't buy too many more though.

Not so unusual

That's not so unusual. Just go to Paul's Hat Works on Geary in San Francisco. Michael, the owner, has several fedoras...starting at around $1300 and going up. But hey, they're PURE BEAVER!!!!...KC

Wouldn't shock me if someone tried it. After all, there was a fashion of few years back of wearing pre-worn-out jeans. Remember that? I'm not talking "stone washed," but actually tattered and torn NEW blue jeans. And I see that the western-wear shops are now selling cheap straw cowboy hats that come already banged up, apparently so all those factory and office workers can go out on Friday night looking like they spent the week riding the range.
It's called the Toby Keith model, I'm not joking either.

I do not blame the consumer for not knowing their hat values. I blame the hatmakers who the quality and charge this. "Making a profit" is one thing but this is saying, "I am going to bend the consumer over a table and....". You know what I mean. :whistling

Nobody is forcing him to do it, and he will brag about it later. a fool and his money...

But the customer who buys this hat wants something other than honest value. He wants his ego gratified. He wants a wad of cash sitting on his head. And that's exactly what he'll get.

Some people wish to spend a lot of dough on things, just for the sake of spending. Sellers who provide them with that opportunity are fine by me. If doing so is a "crime", it's certainly a victimless one.

Hi,

Is there ANY raw material for felt fedora where a body is that expensive?
Rabbits or Beavers w. golden fleece? :(
Wool: maybe of some CITES listed species - Vicuna? Shahtoosh? (Tibetan antelope).

Maybe some extra furs - sable? - that is already for furriers.

Montecristi straw: 1400 USD also hype, since the finest hat bodies don't cost more than 500 USD at the source namely in Montecristi. At least you get here a rare straw for that price which is very WORK INTENSE to manufacture. The point here is that it shoud be worth that since it is thousand work hours - but the master who produces that does receive only peanuts compared to the sale price.

Or is the brandname THAT expensive? It can be worth billions if the name is remembered worldwide like the produce of a very famous soda company-but the markup is really up to the seller.

Regards
