Got this original 1959 LW Foster G1 from Goodwear Leather. I was born in 1959. Jacket is same age as me. It is in excellent wearable condition.

Good score. The 1950s jackets had the original goat and the mouton collars. These "good" jackets lasted until about 1967.

The 1950s jackets are very collectible and only slightly less desirable than the earlier M-422A jackets. You did well.

You are correct. All the way through 7823C spec they are very collectible. From 7823 to 7823C about the only that changed by the specs was the zipper on A and B, C went to a rectangle pocket.

7823D changed the knits. And they allowed mutton to be substituted with synthetic fur. You see a mix of these jackets either way with the mutton, however they all have the non bi directional double ply knits. They just don’t look as good. But still somewhat valuable if you find the mutton collar as these jackets are right in the heat of the Vietnam war.

7823E spec went from 1970 till 2020. That spec is entirely synthetic collar and allowed for cow skin to be used and embossed to look like goat. There are still some made of goat. You gotta just go through looking to find them.

7823E are not collectible jackets. But they are still good military issued jackets. They are what a lot of us call beater jackets. Just wear them and don’t worry about messing them up. They are very cheap and plentiful, if you look long enough you can get a decent example for less than 200.
