1inch ribbons on Fedoras? is it very realistic to the GE? Do you think it makes the crown look to big? Opinions...
I love thin ribbons. Even smaller than 1 inch. Look at western hats for example. They normally have larger crowns and thinner ribbons than a dress fedora and don't look unbalanced.
One inch ribbons are in no way unusual. They are well-liked by many. Here's a thread that you may enjoy, http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?47254
Would you say 1inch ribbons were common in the GE? If so, could you maybe provide any pics of back then or present of some fedora's with 1 inch ribbon? I have looked everywhere but I can not find anything..
One inch ribbons are my current favorites. I do think they tend to make the crown look taller than even a 1-1/8" ribbon does. Given my smallish head, I think a crown 4" in front, with a 1" ribbon, would look best on me. I have a hat that's close to that but I plan for my next hat to strive for a 4"-er. In spite of all that, I do have hats with 7/8" and 1" ribbons with a taller crown and I love them and think they look great. It's just that, well, one must follow his quest for the perfect hat.
:arated: 3/8" is my preference. The LEE ADVENTURER as well as the iconic STRATOLINER were both thin ribbon and "urban" (for want of a better word) dress hats. Hoyt Hats' "Demon Hanover" a "railbird's" hat from the track. my .o2
There are so many posted around here on the Lounge that I hardly know where to begin. Check this thread, http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?45266
If you want to do a quick web search as well you will fnd the modern Akubra Sydney/Fedora is a 1" ribbon as is the Akubra Casual in their Lifestyle collection. I own both and like the ribbon size.
Need some Mid-Ribbon Love.... Seems like with all the VS Wanderers getting done, this would have caught some love.... My bad as well. Love the Middies! VS Grand Wanderer in Dove
I know I've posted this hat quite a bit recently, but its the only one I have pics of on my phone. Optimo silverbelly with a vintage 12L blue-gray ribbon Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
A look at a few more. Clockwise from upper left, Stetson Playboy, Dobbs Twenty light weight, Adam Executive, VS light weight.
Here's one that has me stumped, a British quality made Woodrow & sons from the mid 50s (according to the newspaper packing under the sweat) There's something not right about the 'porkpie' finish which definitely not factory done....however there are no giveaways as to how it was originally.
That looks like a nice felt and a beautiful hat just waiting to be resurrected. Somehow the porkpie shaping doesn't suit it. Perhaps give it a good steaming and try something different?
