Not many pilots became ace in a day (= 5 EA shot down on the same day).
But Pilot Officer Albert Lewis made it even twice.
First time was on the 19th of may 1940 when flying with 85 Sq. in France during the Blitzkrieg, where he bagged 5 Bf 109E's.
Second time came with the 249 Sq on the 27th of September, where he completed no more than 4 sorties and claimed 6 kills, 1 probable and 1 damaged.
This herculean effort brought his total score to 18 destoyed, 2 and 1 shared probable and 1 damaged.
24 hours later he was badly burned whilst baling out of his Hurricane high over Thames Estuary.
Luckily he recovered and went on flying May next year as an instructor before he was given command of 261 Sq in Ceylon after less than a month behind the frontline.
April 9th 1942 he was shot down again - this time by Zeros soon after he had taken off in response to a surpriseraid on China Bay.
After that he was repatriated back to UK in june and saw no further operational flying.
Quite a character!!!
