Akubra Whippet style question

Hi folks, anyone own or have an opinion on an Akubra Whippet? I was getting ready to place an order for a new hat (Fed IV in a tawny fawn) and I figured I would try and save some on the shipping by ordering two hats at one time. The Whippet caught my eye as a short brimmed model (something different).

The text in the order screen says - Formerly made in Australia under the Stetson brand, this hat has been restyled and and given a new lease of life. A great little hat for those looking for a short brim. The brim has a bound edge.

So I figure this was a Stetson Whippet, but the "restyling" could mean anything. I'm mostly curious about the crown height and taper. I will ask the vendor as well before placing the order, just to be sure.

And just to save another thread if the Whippet gets a thumbs down,,any suggestions on a nice modern Stetson short brimmed hat, 2 - 2 1/4 lower crown? Saxon perhaps?

I bought an Akubra Hampton which is similar to the Whippet. Great hats as I enjoy a stingy brim. I've just started noticing that the rabbit felt is getting more pliable with use. So if you're after a stingy brim, I can say you can't go wrong with an Akura.

But you've asked about dimensions! As near as I can tell, the Whippet is nowhere near the dimensions of the old Stetson Whippets.

This is a comparison of the Akubra Whippet and Hampton.

This thread has dimensions of a Stetson Whippet, mentions a three inch brim which the Akubra definitely does not have.

Cheers

stingy city

I'm a big fan of the Hampton also.

I can't see any discernable difference between that and the Whippet in the photos but in the flesh the Hampton certainly has one of the loosest bashes I've seen on a pre-creased akubra. I think it tends too look a little taller and squarer as a result.

It's got a nice broad ribbon and best of all comes in moonstone/cruiser grey!

Sweet town hat!

If the brim was 1cm wider it'd be perfect;) .

I got a response from those nice folks at Hats Direct.

The crown height on the Akubra Whippet is approximately 4 1/2 inches at the front and 5 inches on the side. The taper is not as defined as the Stylemaster but it does have a slight taper. They didn't make any comparisons to the original Whippet however.

Now I know. I may be back to my choice of a Campdraft as the 2nd hat in the order.

Thanks fellas.

A lot of Campdraft lovers out there... I'm sure you'll be happy. I have the Stylemaster, which is a bit porkpie-ish but more elegant.
