i know most of you don't bother following up my obscure arty film recommendations... ('Northfork' anyone ?

no, i didn't think so)
but i saw a Chinese film last night callled 'Everlasting Regret' by Stanley Kwan, and i must say, the scenes set in Shanghai in the 30s and 40s are absolutely exquisite. it didn't really matter that i couldn't follow too well what was going on, or that the film was on the whole depressing and nothing much happened. the costumes and sets and photography were stunning. but in a low-key muted sort of way. since most of you will never see it, here are some token stills.....
