Another Dumb Idea...

As a newbie, I am in the nice/potentially embarrassing position of thinking of things that may be new and cool, or more likely are stupid and were discounted years ago for good reason.

Today's dumb idea is this...

Some amongst us have hats with untapers/reverse tapered crowns, with more space inside them. Winter is approaching. So, has anybody ever tried making themselves a hatliner out of something a little more cosy than silk or satin?

I know someone who does amigurumi. To you and me, that's "making cute little animals out of crochet". She can, and has, used some very fine wools to crochet fairly thin.

I have asked her, as an experiment, to crochet me a simple bowl-shaped hat, in as fine a yarn as she has. The hat will be finished around the bottom with two pieces of 1.5 inch grosgrain, encasing the bottom of the crochet on the inside and outside. The lining of a hat will be removed, and this woolen liner will go in its place. The ribbon at its base will be tucked down behind the headband, as was the original liner, so the part of the hat in contact with the head will be no thicker than it was.

For those of you in the Arctic Circle, does this idea interest you? Can you see any problems with it?

Hey Fats, that really sounds like a 'cool' idea.
But here in Dixie, [its been over 100 degrees this past week] I am not sure we need any extra insulation! :D
Even in January, most times it is not too cold.

But in colder climes, I think it would work fine.

Might be a good Idea for the winter months up here in the mountains in Pa., especially with my bald noggin'. :eusa_doh:

Well, once mine is done, I'll post pictures...

...and let you know if it's itchy. ;)

Fatwoul -- If it's cold enough to entertain that kind of liner, what the heck are you going to do about your ears? :D

Cheers,

Yes, I was thinking about that too. To be honest, I have no idea. :D

Because the liner itself has to remain very thin, the insulating effect it possesses has yet to be seen. It might simply be a more colourful alternative for the cooler weather, whilst still not much warmer than a standard liner.

Having said that, I don't know how good these are (The look like they might fall off quite easily), but for those of us who dread the thought of having to forego our feds in the winter, a combination of the two might be an idea.

Have you ever considered sporting a tobaggon underneath your fedora?

See, the problem with wearing a conventional wooly hat of any kind - even a very thin one - under a fedora is that it will either stretch the headband, or require a fedora of a larger headband to begin with. If you don't mind having a special fed for the winter, I suppose you could order one a size or two larger for the purpose, but this is surely going to leave you with a hat that looks too big. The intention behind my idea was to provide warmth for the head, whilst not affecting the outward appearance of the hat.

The idea would be to simply remove the winter lining in the warmer months, and replace it again when it gets colder, instead of having to have additional hats.

I think it sounds like a great idea Fatwoul...She could try an angora yarn, so it's really soft and not itchy. Again though...it's that ears that will suffer...unless you have her make some flaps that can fold down and out of the Fed, for those really cold days.

Thanks for the tip - I will pass it on. I understand angora is pricey, but since I'm paying, that's OK. lol

That could work, but of course they would end up being as thin as the rest of the wool, so I don't know how much warmth they could offer. Being very thin, they would also flap about unless held in place by elastic, which could look a little peculiar.

The other problem is getting them past the headband of the fedora, without them stretching when the hat is worn.

I think what I need to do is get one made up without flaps, and from there I'll have a better idea about whether the flaps can be included.

Earmuff etiquette was discussed here.

Indeed it was, and if I recall someone there suggested that the band goes behind your head when wearing a hat. That's why I said I expected them to fall off easily. ;)

When I was a lad, I remember seeing someone with a fedora that had a cotton flannel lining, and ear flaps that folded up inside the hat when not in use. I could swear I saw that same hat, new, on some company's web site.
I can't find it, right now, but you might search some of the outdoor supply houses.

I would be very interested to see that, JT, so if you think of anything more that could help this search, I'd be grateful.

Thanks for reassuring me that even if this idea is a stinker, it wasn't mine so the blame lies elsewhere! lol

EDIT: OK, so I've done a brief search, and Stetson's "Stockton" and "Waring" model hats are supposed to sport fold-down earflaps. None of the pictures online show this properly, so if anybody has heard of either of these hats, has one, or has looked at one in a shop, please let me know about it!
