Long overdue, but finally available: the custom made Uruguayan Plato Grandes Cataluña in 33cm.

The softest possible Uruguayan grown merino wool, fitted with fine satin lining and carrying the woven Cataluña label.

But, there is more from Uruguay, a limited edition in very small supply: the unlined boina Castilla in multi-colour cotton, 29cm diameter in 5 colour schemes.

These berets were developed by the Fábrica Nacional de Sombreros (Montevideo), but are too costly to put into production. Hence a very small number available exclusively at South Pacific Berets.

In the woods with the "Alpine" from Boneteria Auloronesa.
Last week, this beret drove me crazy while working in the garden: everytime I bent over and scooped up the leaves, the beret flopped forward. Straightening up it stayed there, obscured the view and had to be pushed back. A problem only with this big one, the standart sized ones behaved impecable.

My wife has "permanently borrowed" my custom-made Boneteria Auloronesa universel. She has a stack of berets in many colors, including a Laulhère and several Eloseguis, but she has worn my BA several days in a row now. When I finally said something, she replied that she didn't even know it was mine!

Has this happened to any of you gentlemen?

Chasseurs Alpins in Narvik

Beautiful photographic material of some great berets! The Corps Expéditionnaire Français en Scandinavie (French Expeditionary Force in Scandinavia or CEFS) was a Franco-Polish armed force sent to Norway during the Second World War to combat the German invasion.

The Corps was created under the command of Colonel Bethouart, on 28 February 1940, in order to assist Finland, which had been attacked by Stalin's Soviet Union (the Soviet-Finnish “Winter War”).

The signing of the Treaty of Moscow on 12 March 1940 ended the project of intervention. The CEFS was re-activated on March 23, 1940 in anticipation this time of a German aggression in Norway .

While Germany landed its troops in six coastal areas (Narvik, Trondheim, Bergen, Kristiansand, Oslo and Egersund) on 8 and 9 April 1940 (Operation Weserübung), the British navy tried to oppose in the Narvik region where on 10 - 13 April a violent naval battle took place.

The French troops fought the Germans alongside the Norwegians until June 8, when they re-embarked to fight on French territory. The French and Polish casualties numbered 350 men.

And the Chasseur Alpin foulards are on SPECIAL this week; various models under the Boneteria Auloronesa and Aotearoa label with discounts of at least 20% (as long as stock lasts).

Not often do I have the pleasure to introduce a completely new line of berets to the stock, but here is one: boinas Guarda Pampa!

The 'Guarda Pampa' (People of the Earth) was originally created by the aboriginal people of Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia. This symmetric design symbolizes the reflection of the Andes Mountains in the lakes of the region. The Guarda Pampa, adopted and made iconic by the Argentine gauchos, has become a design that is woven into the fabric of Argentine and Chilean culture – from the flat pampas regions to the urban cities to the Andes Mountains.

Many designs, originally of Mataco and Mapuche origin, are commonly seen in gaucho's berets. Hard to find, even in Argentina and Chile, South Pacific Berets now stocks a (very) small number of boinas guarda pampa (with more stock expected late December). Hard wearing, heavy duty cotton berets (120 grams each!).

Part #2 of the Guarda Pampa beret saga:

Just arrived, the new boinas Toloa Tupida in 31cm cotton with Guarda Pampa design. This traditional aboriginal Mapuche weave symbolizes the refection of the high Andes Mountains in the lakes of Patagonia. Presently, I have only one or two of each model in stock (until some time next year).

Meanwhile, I have just been notified that more of the Boinas Guarda Pampa Arandú will be shipped later this month; fingers crossed in time for Christmas shipping (alas, apart from one model, all presently still in stock!).

I was "coerced" into giving my blue Laulhere Etchea to my sister. She looks better in it than I do and I'm alright with that.

Not quite that model; it looks like a crocheted beret, which is quite typical for Argentine and Chilean gauchos to wear. Most of these crocheted berets are handmade and not on an industrial scale. Closest to this model would be the Tolosa Tupida, but not the same.

Later this week the new stock of foulards Aotearoa will arrive; time to create some space on the shelves of the Aotearoa's.
upload_2017-11-19_13-34-17.png
upload_2017-11-19_13-34-29.png

So, this week all models on SPECIAL at a discount of over 20% @ $39.50 for one week only (or as long as stock lasts). The bérets foulard Aotearoa were developed by South Pacific Berets with two specific objectives in mind:

    • to create a high quality, very comfortable foulard beret in a tight knit wool but at the same time in a light weight;
    • and to sell these at a competitive price.
upload_2017-11-19_13-34-47.png
upload_2017-11-19_13-34-55.png

These berets weigh only 70% of compatible berets, making them excellent for in-between seasons. Soft to the touch and super comfortable. The bérets foulard Aotearoa come in a range of plateaus (diameters) and in two distinct colours: Graphite grey and Fox; a beautiful brown with a hint of red.
upload_2017-11-19_13-32-16.png
upload_2017-11-19_13-32-24.png

In the same quality comes the majestic Txapeldun ('Champion' in the Basque language) in traditional black and a plateau of 36cm.

Got my two boinas gaucho pampa today, fastest delivery ever 1/2 the world in 5 days!
Your description of these berets don't do them justice. This is not a light summer beret like the standard tolosa tupidas I have, but almost canvas like thick, heavy cotton and I can see that gauchos in Patagonia wear these right thru their winter. Real workmen's berets. Very, very pleased with these.
Read on your facebook that more are coming. More in other colours too? I'm hooked!

Thanks Erik, I couldn't agree more! My guarda pampa hasn't really left my head since receiving it a week ago and yes, I should elaborate a bit more on these berets.
In my eagerness to share the good news of their arrival, I mistakenly named these berets Tolosa Tupida - they are not (but too late to edit old Fedora Lounge posts...). These boinas are fitted with the Tolosa label, which stands for a heavier, denser quality beret.
upload_2017-11-20_9-52-37.png

The Boinas Arandú are of an even heavier quality and like you say, closer to canvas; very durable and much more protective from the elements than any other cotton beret.
upload_2017-11-20_9-58-44.png
upload_2017-11-20_9-58-55.png

The elastic headband in these berets is surprisingly comfortable and frankly, I haven't received so many comments from people about any other beret I wear (what's more, all positive!).
They're selling out fast, but the Arandú models should be restocked in a couple of weeks, all going well; the Tolosa's will be sometime next year.
