If the straw breaks on a Panama, can it always be repaired? Or sometimes is it impossible to repair, and the whole hat has to be thrown out?
Like most things...."it depends". I have repaired splits in the Panama straw by gluing a ribbon and/or very thin leather of a similar colour to the back side as a 'boot'. If it is a slit then I it is successful in hiding the break. I am working on one now that has an actual hole....with missing straw. Not sure what the hell I will do other than finding ribbon or leather of the same colour to boot the backside. It will never present as a pristine hat any longer but I think I can return it to a nice and serviceable Panama. The boot at least will prevent the disintegration of the straw from spreading. It is a shame as it is an expensive Panama. If the straw breaks on a Panama, can it always be repaired? Or sometimes is it impossible to repair, and the whole hat has to be thrown out?

If I can find an old discarded Panama I can extract individual straw fibres and one by one glue them in place to slowly close the hole. Painstaking but rewarding if I can get it done. But first to find that scrap Panama.Short of a catastrophic failure of the straw, I'm sure there are tons of things that can be done to 'doctor up' a damaged panama, but yeah, it 'is' too bad when it's an expensive one. Good luck with your repair.
I guess it's the same concept of repairing the caining on a chair only much smaller. That would be a great fix.If I can find an old discarded Panama I can extract individual straw fibres and one by one glue them in place to slowly close the hole. Depending on were the break is located (like on the brim) I have on occasion turned a ripped Panama into a really nice Duplex. That is I've had a ripped Panama turned into a Duplex by Mike Miller. If the straw breaks on a Panama, can it always be repaired? It is a great idea at this point as theory.....real life may prove different. But first the hunt for an organ donor Panama hat.I guess it's the same concept of repairing the caining on a chair only much smaller. That would be a great fix.
I have attached a photo of the hat that Panama Hats Direct is about to ship to me.
I circled a black spot that looks kind of weird to me with an orange circle.
Do you guys think that is weird? Is that something you would be concerned about it if it was your hat that you were about to have shipped to you?
What do you think that is?
Is that a reason to object to the hat?
I've also emailed the company to ask them what it is, and I've yet to hear a reply from them about that, but I'd like to hear your feedbacks as well.
Secondary question: do you think the hat in the photo looks like a good value for a price of $325 USD?
I think it's a good looking hat! I wouldn't let the black spot bother me, especially since it's on the side and so close to the ribbon. Considering these are hand woven hats made out of natural materials, I've learned not to expect perfection.I have attached a photo of the hat that Panama Hats Direct is about to ship to me.
