Being new to The Fedora Lounge I was recently wondering if members didn't exercise a "stand down" practice when they see a fellow member bidding on a HAT on ebay...
I have seen certain hats that I wanted to bid on, but when I saw in the bid history that it was being bid on by a Fedora Lounge member I stayed away.
'Course there are so many members that it is possible I last minute snipped a member unknowingly...
Is this a practice or not? I realize it'd have to be on the Honor System !!

I don't know about that, but if I got outbid by a Lounge member, then I'd feel better about losing than if some schmoe outbid me.

Ebay Bidding Practice.

IMHO I would prefer not to know Lounge members Ebay handles since this raises the point in your posting to bid or not to bid. My feeling whoever is willing to pay the market price for a hat should go for it.

I'm probably going to be cooling it a lot more on Ebay in 2006, & enjoy the 1940's hats & clothes I won this year. Peter

A few years ago when there were only about 40 registered users some of us wouldn't bid against each other. But now, holy moly there are over 1500 registered users and who knows how many lurkers, it's really not practical now. So take your best shot, at least most users here should know what they are bidding on and a reasonable price to pay for it.

MattC, eBay itself owns one of these sniper services, though it doesn't advertise the fact! It's here:

I'll be damned, too! That's the sniping program I use.

BTW, guys, I have lost three or four auctions by using the default bidding time of seven seconds. It seems that auctionsniper's servers get out of sync with the eBay servers (or Internet traffic slows it down). I have taken to entering a slightly longer lead time (usually 10-12 seconds) just to be safe. Lost a pair of WWII command pilot wings (both 2" and 3") that I desperately wanted and would have won if my snipe had been placed in time.

If I see a fellow lounge member I won't bid but with 1550 of us now I can't remember every name! No, I have never had a problem in 5 years with Hammersnipe.

Just my opinion but if one is going to bid for an item he might as well simply do as Ebay say, enter the MOST he is willing to pay for an item. Part of what runs items up to ludicrious amounts beyond market values is the frenzy in the end that someone with more money than brains keeps bidding like an idiot. If $50 is all you want to pay for something it makes no sense to be sad if it ultimately went for $54. This Ebay bidding business is a side effect of gambling for those who don't know when to stop betting.

That is exactly what I do with a sniping program. I bid the most I am willing to bid and then it is out of my hands. :cheers1:

Me, too. And (in all candor) I must admit that this eBay buying can be like a narcotic. There is truly something wonderful about being the victor once and a while. As an aside, I have recently started to sell off some of my purchases (WWII items, mostly) for a substantial profit. At the current rate, by the end of 2006 I should have a net investment of about $zero in a substantial uniform, insignia, and wing collection.

Snipers do indeed ****** things out from under people's noses. I've never used a sniping program - but also, i don't often get sniped. I guess the stuff i go for is either so small that noone wants it even for a collection or so commonplace (not!) that everyone has the things already. Therefore i have no real problem with sniping. As i say i don't use a program, but i wait until the last 5 seconds before i hit the "confirm bid" button, and i don't buy much so i generally have enough dispensible cash to bid high enough to get the stuff i REALLY want and not worry about snipers. This is known as overwhelming bidding. So basically i'm a sniper. I get alot of pleasure out of sniping manually, so i don't use a program. That's the nature of an auction, i'm afraid. Put on your max. and take your chances.
