Went to see CPD Sunday here in NYC.
STRANGE!!!
Obviously, they have an "eclectic" mix of influences, but their music was mostly crazy "Oingo Boingo", "Devo" early 80's stuff!!!
They DID do their Swing thing, and THAT seemed to pick the audience up, but they never sustained the momentum.
Stange. I actually read that they had moved into a Samba,Calypso Salso direction, which I like. But nope!!!
My wife and I (and a new friend, Brian) were perplexed, so headed to The Slipper Toom for the Rockabilly night.

Never

I was never a fan of the CPDs.
And never regretted that decision.
Clearly they ran the Retro-Fad of the
late 90's to their financial benefit.
Thank God for Bill Elliott, and a few
others, who were here long before
the fad, and have continued to make
swing-worthy music. IMHO

:coffee:

Well, in California the hardestcore swingsters were all ex-punks. In NY, the punks were way too hardcore for swing, so the artrock crowd embraced it for a hot second or so. Now about all that's left of the NY end of it is a lot of out-of-work jazz musicians, which there always are, anyway.

Actually, I still like the Zoot Suit Riot album, and I got over my anti=swing thing while we were in CA in '97.
It drove me kinda crazy that all of a sudden Gap customers were into swing!!
After living in NY for a while, I realized I was punishing myself for boycotting events, after all, I'D been digging this jive since '78.
And, I really liked Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. I LOVED this "Neo" attitude, as I myself have a VERY eclectic musical tastes (I've dj'd many years here and in UK, also played in various bands: Rockabilly, punk, 60's garage, Hardore black metal!!!) so I have an OPEN MIND!!
My main criticism of CPD was they couldn't control their energy. It was obvious the crowd preferred their swing stuff, but they just kept losing the momentum.
