Compositon Books

I don't know if this was already written about, but I bought a couple of these(you know, the black and white notebooks...) for college and that got me to thinking. Does anyone know when these were invented or broughtout or what-have-you? I've done some searching, but google and I don't get along too well when I look for stuff that's specific.
