And the OP dissappears... Lol.
I think sometimes folks get befuddled when there's not a quick and easy answer to their questions. There's not an "off the rack" hat for a lot of "recommend me a hat" type threads.
Sure there is. You guys got me to look at the Akubra Fed IV as a first hat, and I love it!
Fed is a nice hat, but not a 50's style per se.
Just tossin' it out there . . . even for just a look-see.
I didn't ask for a 50's style hat. I'm not the OP.
Actually, it's called the Casablanca, but hey, I was close.
Ditto to that! I bought a nice Borsalino form Miamibruno on the Bay (for $135 shipped), and it is truly exquisite! He seems to have a lot of nice fedoras up for auction, and he provides detailed descriptions.
For the look in question, I recommend the current Stetson Whippet in caribou gray. It has a classic teardrop shape, medium brim with binding and is a great color. I get more compliments on this hat than any other. I think the gray ribbon and binding is much nicer than black, but that's a personal preference of mine.
I've had a number of Akubra and find them too stiff, as others have mentioned. I guess it's because I'm a city guy, but then, so were movie detectives. The Akubra Sydney is less stiff, but I found the crown more tapered than I liked.
In my opinion, vintage hats are a gamble unless you have it in your hand (or a pipe dream if you have a large noggin), and custom is pointless until you know exactly what you want, which you don't. An important consideration is that a new production hat bought in the US can be returned if necessary. I recommend either Bencraft or Delmonico's as a vendor, they are both excellent.
Here is a nice Dick Tracy detectives hat from Penman Hats
I think Moon has got more vintage hats in the last year than I have in the last five. Just to show the difference size can make when going after vintage hats. Size does matter
I'm always on the lookout for 7 1/2 as well as my size
Yes, Moon, Thank You. You've tipped me off a couple of times to some good ones
Buy the wrong hat and you'll end up like this:
I was just at Barons Hats in Burbank. They have Boggies screen worn Fedora from this movie. It was given to them be the Robert Blake the actor in this picture with Boggie I'm told.
I'm not sure I would trust anything Robert Blake had to say. (Bogie has 1 G)
+1 re Blake.
Gents to clarify it isn't Blake saying this , Its the original owner of Barons; Eddie Baron. Its stated on a placard that accompanies the hat on display.
