“Azucar” broke much new ground when it was recorded in 1965. It was the first made for radio recording that broke the 2:45 min mark (2 years before the Doors’ “Light My Fire”). It is reportedly the first record that features a piano solo where the montuno was continued on with the left hand, while the improvised solo was played with the right.

From a sociological standpoint, the song was already a tremendous live dance hall hit with Latino, Black, and (hip) White audiences/dancers before it was even recorded.
It’s nice to see Eddie, his band, and his tune get its due.
