Time to turn you cats & kittens on to my favorite piano playing gals. For those who are familiar with them, feel free to chime in on any I might have overlooked.

Cleo Brown: Recorded mostly for Decca in the 30's and 40's, toured extensively. She recorded a series of bawdy tunes under the name "The Hollywood Hot Shots". Left music, became a nurse and was rediscovered in the 80's.

Hadda Brooks: Pianist, composer, actress and hosted her first tv show in LA in 1957. She performed with Artie Shaw, Count Basie and Charlie Barnet, her style spanned boogie to ballads. She helped launch a record label (Modern), had bit parts in hollywood films (The Bad & The Beautiful) and eventually emigrated to Australia where she hosted yet another radio show. She was best known for her sexy, smokey voice and her biggest hit was "That's My Desire".

Hazel Scott. Classically trained, she was a star on the radio at the ripe old age of 16. She performed with Count Basie in the Roseland Ballroom, and was the first black woman to have her own television show which was cancelled when she was accused of communist sympathies. As you can hear in this clip, she deftly mixes classical and jazz in her style. Gorgeous stuff.

Mary Lou Williams: Composer, arranger and virtuoso pianist in a range of styles. She was the chief arranger for Andy Kirk's "Clouds Of Joy" and composed a brilliant 12 part composition known as "The Zodiac Suite". Duke Ellington called her "soul on soul", and Mary Lou made tremendous contributions to jazz education and was always on the cutting edge.

How about the lovely Ramona and her Grand Piano? She appeared with Paul Whitemen for several years in the 30's. She was a wonderful pianist, had a delicious dusky voice, and specialized in ironic witty and sometimes risque songs. I guess she was more pop than jazz, but what a classic.
