I've been looking
at a few vented canvas lids for the summer season meself. But like 'slim I too fear that whatever remains of my brains will bake like a porkchop in a crockpot! (say that 3 times fast)
...that said there is a seller from CA. on OFAS who sells a very similar item for ten bucks all day long. I suppose an oilcloth would also be prohibitively warm.
I wish I could find something like this w/ a 2 3/8" - 2 5/8" brim

Might be just the thing for out in the broiling bush, when it's too hot for felt.
I have a similar lid in dark green Gore-Tex lined canvas for the rainy season.
These are loads better than the military type "boonie hat" where you can't keep the brim from flapping 9 ways at once.

I have not yet purchased this number. I am tempted, especially if I do a great deal of hiking this summer up around the Pacific northwest.
What caught my eye, as a "hat movie guy" is its similarity to the cotton duck fedora worn by Mrs. Mulray's Japanese gardner in Chinatown. Remember, he fished Noah Cross' spectacles out of the salt pond? Am I rambling?

Yes, it weighs a lot more than a panama but it will take rain like my Akubar. And in the hot humid South you are going to sweat no matter what you wear.
Still, one can't have too many choices.

I've considered this hat a number of times, but have always passed because of that darn wire in the brim edge. It's been my experience with those things that once the wire has been bent, it will never straighten out again, and the brim looks all cattywhompus from then on. For those of you in rainy climates, they also tend to rust. What's worse, if the wire ever breaks from reshaping, then it's all over.
My Barmah has a nylon "wire" in the brim edge to keep its shape, which works pretty well. The problem there is that the hat brim has shrunk over time from the constant sun exposure, and as a result the sides are creeping up like a cowboy hat because the nylon cable obviously doesn't shrink with the brim. Not bad if you like that style, but my ears have started getting sunburned as a result! That's not a pleasant prospect when you spend as much time in the sun as I do.
