Footlocker Art

Authentic?

My dad brought this home today.

Footlocker is definitely original. How about the artwork? I have my doubts.

The P-47 in the corner was definitely done by a different artist than the "main" artwork.

The main piece, however, is more difficult to tell. It has a protective coat of lacquer that is yellowing. The name and air force are painted over the artwork and are also protected by the lacquer. There are dents and flaked paint as well as a horizontal crack running through the pilot's head and another through his feet. The condition makes me think it is original but it could have been painted 20 or 30 years ago and still have that 'aged' look. Then again, why not paint a more famous unit than the 2nd Air Force unless it is original? A faker would have gone for the 8th AF, the Flying Tigers (which is painted on the P-40's nose) or some other better known unit.

Enough jabbering, take a look for yourself. These are the only markings.

It looks legit to me. I have seen a number (as well as currently owning one) of decorated footlockers over the years, and the weathering on the varnished area looks right. In my humble opinion, I'd say it's original.

Thanks guys!

That's the consensus on another militaria forum. A great piece of artwork indeed.

I'm no expert on Footlockers, but another item that hasn't been mentioned is that the paint coloring looks period. Modern paints are brighter and shinier in color.
