Up for sale from my personal collection is an exceptional mid-1940s D-pocket horsehide aviator jacket by Windward.
Windward appears primarily as a label used on American outdoor and outerwear garments from the 1930s onward. Windward leather jackets were produced by third-party manufacturers and were part of the post-war boom in motorcycle and aviation-inspired outerwear. Based on construction details, materials, and pattern, this jacket was most likely produced by Rough Wear, a major and highly respected manufacturer that also supplied jackets to the U.S. Army during World War II.
This is a rare aviator-style production, featuring a very unusual and elegant pocket configuration, along with French seams throughout—a detail typically reserved for higher-end manufacture. It is fitted with an original mid-1940s Talon zipper, which functions perfectly. The pattern is significant enough that it has since been reproduced by modern makers such as Vanson and Eastman Leather.
The jacket is constructed from beautiful, lighter-weight yet plush horsehide and is in exceptional condition. The leather presents extremely clean throughout—particularly in the pockets—suggesting minimal wear over its lifetime. Noted issues are limited to minor distressing to the satin lining, one missing cuff button, and a missing pull on the chest pocket zipper.
This example is also notable for being a rarer larger size. Measurements taken to the best of my ability (please allow minor variance due to human error):
Armpit to armpit: 23.5"
Shoulder to shoulder: 19.75"
Length: 26.5" (front) / 24.75" (back)
Sleeve length: 23.25"
