Mayser Spezial, size 57cm, probably early to mid 1950s and in great condition. Fantastic Homburg in less common dark blue and measures about 58cm.

Steve a very, very nice Mayser.
It has more the "Lobbia" shape than the classic Homburg style. More low crown and brim very rounded ("cambrate" in italian hatters language).
A very special gift for Christmas

Mayser beauties in small sizes... (53-54 cm) Contact me if anyone is interested. Too small for my 60 cm head unfortunately.

Grey Peluche from the late 30's (a 1939 newspaper was under the sweater). Incredibly soft and pliable.

Black snapbrim, late 30's or early 50's. Again astonishingly soft and rich felt.
The color is deep black - the poor photos had to be brightened and don't do it justice.

Great finds! I am sorry they are both small sizes.

The gray Velour is especially fantastic. It's great that it contained the newspaper clipping for dating purposes. This is a big help because I have a couple hats with similar construction like this Mayser Talpa which I thought might be late 30s.

My guess is the Superbe is late 40s early to mid 1950s. It has a great form and I really like the mid ribbon. Also do not see many Mayser with the onion skin liner protection.

I am very interested in this topic.
I have several French hats and some Italian (Borsalino especially) whose very special finish or texture of the felt make them unique to the touch and the color changes in direct and reflected light.
I'll try to take some close-up photography and with different light sources to give testimony of the uniqueness of some felts.

I am too! And Hare fur produced them! It would be interesting to find some old (pre 1940) Italian felt / hat manufacturing documents. I would be interested to see if they were using similar hot wet brushed Velour techniques employed by the German, Austrian and French. I am not sure if I have come across a pre 1940 Italian equivalent (to Austrian, German, French Velour). I am definitely going to come over. We need to visit all the Italian hat companies / museums.

I am looking forward to seeing the Mayser and Wilke. I also have an interesting Hückel Weilheim "Lutra" on the way.

Z Dějin Klobouků - TONAK 1799 - 170 - 1969, Jičín Č.Sovák

I recently received this book on the 170th (1799 - 1969) Anniversary of TONAK (24 Years). Yes no mention of Hückel (146 Years) on the cover. Most of the book is a history of hats but there is a chapter on the history of the JHS factory. There is a good bit of propaganda but that is to be expected.

German brown "Homburg" hat size 60.
Very tall and full crown - medium wide ribbon.

Made by Rockel. It has only two paper labels: one handwritte nreading "2" and another one with the size 60.
The sweater leather is ultra-thin and reads "real Rockel hair (fur)".

I would appreciate your input on the dating.
I'd place the date at late-30's, but maybe it is already early post-war.
