HAND-TAILORED BESPOKE SUIT FROM JOSEPH BORG OF PRINCETON. DATED 1976.

A classic dark navy, and cut so that the jacket could be readily converted into a blazer if the trousers wouldn't fit you!

Sleeve: 25 3/8
Shoulder: 18 1/4
Length: 31 1/2
Waist: 15 1/2 (+2) (measured flat; double for size.)
Inseam: 29 (+1 1/2) with 1 1/4" cuff.
This is a genuine one-of-a-kind item! This suit was personally hand-tailored by Joseph Borg of Princeton, the tailor who worked on the menswear for *Sunset Boulevard* just after he arrived in the United States from Malta and who went on to become the premier Princeton tailor.
This was made in 1976 for Colonel Eugene P. Gillespie for his work as a Trustee of Princeton Hospital, a position that he held after retiring from the Army in 1964 with the rank of Full Colonel.
Gillespie graduated from Princeton in 1940, and after just a year of law school at the University of Virginia was called to serve in the Army. He served as an Army Air Corps pilot over Africa, Sicily, France, and Germany, and then had a distinguished career in the Army until his retirement, when he returned to Princeton. This suit was tailored for him for his role as a Trustee of Princeton Hospital, a position that he took after his retirement from his second career as an administrator at Princeton University--his alma mater.
This suit has a wonderful pedigree!
And it's a pedigree that it fully lives up to. Cut as a contemporary two-button suit, the jacket is subtly darted and has wonderfully elegant lapels reflecting Borg's early Savile Row influence--he never worked on the Row, but the British Navy officers whose uniforms he worked on as an apprentice were used to London tailoring and Borg's master tailor obliged. The jacket is, of course, fully canvassed--and fully lined in a gorgeous custom lining! This lining is also used inside the two lower external pockets. The cuffs have four buttons and are fully functional. The jacket has a single center vent.
The trousers are beautifully pleated, cuffed, and have their original Talon zipper which moves beautifully smoothly.
Naturally, this was fully hand-tailored by Borg himself--and the hand-stitching throughout is simply wonderful!
The trousers are in excellent condition. The jacket is in Very Good/Excellent condition; it has a smudge on one shoulder, as shown, and a small smudge on one cuff, as shown. These will likely be remediated by dry-cleaning.
And, of course, since this suit is a classic dark navy and classically cut the jacket could be readily converted into a blazer if the trousers wouldn't fit you!
