Here is a link to a little publication that appeals to a very small audience. It's a book of excerpts from 30s and 40s magazines, all articels on writing for the pulps, photos from publishing trade mags, and cover reproductions.

The book is by no means all illustrations but the same publisher puts out a good dozen or so reprints and books per year. Pulps may be more popular than hats, I don't know, but wouldn't it be cool if...

... some enterprising soul edited a Hat Reference using some of the great magazines and resources available through this board? The Hat Life thread made me think of it. There must be some interest in such a book.
