Why do we size hats based on the diameter of our head? Wouldn't it be simpler to use the circumference and not bother with the math to try and figure out how big a noodle we have? There must be a reason and I figure that if anyone knows it'll be someone here.

I think that's a US (and UK) thing. The Europeans use circumference in centimeters. Why we Americans do it that way is unclear. Maybe because the Brits did it first?

When hat shopping, especially vintage, it's helpful to really know your size (and oval shape) in the following;

- American
- UK
- Centimeter circumference
- Inches circumference
- Punti sizing (where a size 7 American, for instance, is a 4-1/2 Punti. I think it's a mathematical combination of circumference around and over the dome of the cranium. Mmmmmmmm, Pi.)
