Hi everyone,

As some of you may know, I recently wrote an article on my blog about the D-Day landings, since the anniversary was in just a few days.

In wondering what to do next, I thought I would write an article for my blog detailing the very FIRST day of the Second World War (3rd September, 1939). This is obviously a very very important day in history...but not many people know anything about it. All the history-books say is that England and France declared war on Germany, Chamberlain made his famous radio broadcast and...that's that.

But in actual fact, a LOT of things happened on the 3rd of September. I got the idea of writing an article for my blog which was no less than an hour-by-hour breakdown of the events of the first day of the Second World War and any help you folks can give me would be great. Of course, these are very specific facts and dates and times I'm after, and finding the information has proved very difficult for rather obvious reasons. If you know where I can find some or if you can provide some of these times (with a source), that'd be helpful.

At the moment, I'm trying to track down the EXACT time that George VI's famous speech was made to the British people, live from Buckingham Palace. All I know is that it was broadcast that evening (or late afternoon), but I haven't been able to find out the broadcast time. Any help here would be great.

There was a great documentary a couple of years ago that took the first day of the Second World War and broke it down into hour-by-hour events. Only I can't remember it's name. I admit that documentary was a partial inspiration for my current write-up.

Of course a lot was happening in Poland. If you could help debunk the myth that the Polish Air Force was destroyed on the ground, that would be great

Taking into account it wasa surprise attack, a lot like Pearl Harbor they put up quite a good fight despite being heavily outnumbered. In fact, there were more German aircraft destroyed than Polish

I searched for events of Sept. 3rd which took place in Poland and Germany, but wasn't able to find any. I did read a lot about the initial invasion, though, and it was very interesting. The purpose of the article was to show that a lot of things happened on the 3rd of September. It wasn't just one radio broadcast and then people went back to work...but that it really was the beginning of a major conflict. I didn't want to include events that happened after that date, and I only included events that happened before merely to give a bit of background and context.

Finding the broadcast-time of the King's speech was very difficult (since the internet is currently SWAMPED with information about the film) but I finally got the correct time from an article I read on the website of the Imperial War Museum, which gave it as 6:00pm, Sept. 3rd, 1939.
