Hi everyone! My husband is a Marine stationed at Marine Corps Base Quantico, and I thought some of you might be interested in these gems from the past!
You know the classic design. You know the incredible features, such as built-in metal doors, shelving and cabinets. But did you know you might be able to obtain a fantastic Lustron home sooner than you ever thought?

The Public Private Venture (PPV) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, on behalf of the Department of Navy is accepting proposals for the dismantling and removal of up to 58 Lustron homes. This is the largest collection of historic Lustrons in the world. The collection is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and this unique program will make the Lustrons available for bidders able to cover the cost of dismantling and relocating the homes.

The threshold criteria for successful bidders will be their ability to remove these unique structures at no incremental cost to the PPV’s family housing project. The PPV is not trying to generate a profit with this request for proposals (RFP), so any bid that covers the cost of dismantling and relocating, without delay to the project, would be financially competitive. The Lustrons in both Geiger Ridge and Argonne Hills are currently occupied by Marine families, so the removal process can not begin until these homes are vacated in June 2006 and Summer of 2007 respectively.

There is lots of info on the website, including photos, colors and floorplans as well as bid proposals. I found the Lustron History section particularly interesting.

Jess,

Thanks for posting the info... I'm a historic preservation student down in Fredericksburg, so we've been hearing about this Lustron deal for a couple years now...

The Lustrons at Quantico are pretty neat, arent they? I've dated a couple Marines up at Quantico, so I've gotten the chance to see them.

I'm actually going to put in a bid for one. I doubt I'll get it, but I can say I tried. My father owns his own business, and has the man power and equiptment to dismantle and remove one, and we have plenty of property in Culpeper County to put it up on. He's willing to help me out with the proposal.

I think it would be awesome to have a little vintage house to put all my vintage stuff! (or junk, as my folks call it)

Nice to hear from someone only a half hour from Fredericksburg!

Jess,

I'm actually in Fredericksburg too! How funny is that!
Hubby commutes up to base everyday. Blah.
Good luck with your proposal--I think that sounds wonderful! Keep us posted on how things progress. I think you could really do some awesome things with a cute little house like that. And Culpeper County would be a perfect place. My parents live over by Madison and its still pretty peaceful and quiet!

Best of luck!

Oh! Another person in Fredericksburg? What are the odds!?

I'll let you know how the Lustron thing develops... they've posted notices all over the U.S, and there are quite a few people interested in them, so I'm not sure what my chances are. I fell in love with Lustrons a couple years ago, and had been wondering when exactly Quantico was going to get rid of them.... so when I picked up the Free Lance Star at work one day and turn the page and there is an article announcing Quantico giving them away, I let out a big whoop and jumped out of my chair. Considering I work in a bank, this wasnt very ladylike, nor was it a good idea. I got a couple looks.

Is the commute up to Quantico really that bad? I'm considering taking a little break from school and was going to apply for a civilian job up there that I saw posted. The commute to Quantico is a lot better than the commute to Alexandria for the other jobs I'm applying for, but at least I could take the VRE to Alexandria, which would be easy since I live near downtown.

Have a nice day, and enjoy this bi-polar Virginia weather we've been getting!
