Here's the breakdown to register a 6 year old truck in California;
Registration fee $40
License fee $51
Weight fee $80
Special Plate $30 (vanity plates)
County fee $10
Total $211

Plus the smog inspection fee was an additional $56

Next to nothing compared to a few years ago

My Toyota is now 8 years old, and the registration was about $80. However, the State of California required a smog inspection at a TEST ONLY station. That was $87 more! Why my car, oh and my truck too THIS year? Guy at the station said they "randomly" select cars, and it was my turn.

64 bucks for 2 years!?

You got a deal! Here in Ohio, it was 48 bucks for the little stickers that go on our license plate, plus another $20 for an "E-Check" for a one year permit on a 3 year old car! :rage:

Registering a car is always a joy in New South Wales

Not! Registering my 1960 Chevy Bel Air costs me $785 here in the most over-governed, over-taxed state in the Western World. New cars cost the same, as we are all forced to pay compulsory third party insurance and huge State levies as part of our registration fees.

NSW is officially titled the 'Premier State', but a sticker I saw on the back of a truck a few weeks back sums it up better. It read 'NSW: the Revenue State.'

:eusa_doh: That's pretty harsh, and reminds me that we are required to have insurance here too! I think it's NO coincidence that one of the largest insurance companies in the country is headquartered in this state.

I'm curious what Wild Root and others with vintage cars pay.

My 7 year old car is relatively cheap in Texas coming in at $53.80 for registration. Inspection I think was $24.50.

I think I paid about $32 in January. No e-check here.

E-check is one of those things that makes my blood boil. Of all the targets they could have chosen, they pick on the average Joe, just trying to get his wage-earning butt to work and back. Putting the burden of lowered pollution levels on the backs of the poor (who are driving old smokey cars because they can't afford to buy anything newer - how the hell are they supposed to pay for an engine rebuild to get back on the road???), and it just keeps them down and working at minimum wage jobs or on public assistance (take the person's car off the road and he/she can't work - DUH!).
A person who can afford a newer, more efficient car gets a pass (and pays the inspection fee). A person who can barely pay the electric bill pays the inspection fee, and gets slammed with an order to bring the car up-to-snuff or else. Where's that money supposed to come from? Geez.
At best, it makes liars out of law-abiding citizens as they go to the guy who will sign the papers saying it's fixed for $50 so you can at least drive the car (and get to work...)
The whole thing stinks like last week's diapers.

My wife is dying to get a Vespa. They look like great rides.

I can't recommend it enough, esp. with gas going through the roof. It costs me about $4.00 to fill up and I get 60 miles/gallon.

I used to pay $20 to register my '66 Mustang, and less than $20 for an annual emissions check.

Now I have a '98 Honda Civic. It's about $70 to register, and $20 every two years for a smog check. Great car--it's only been in the shop for routine maintenance, the back seat folds down for cargo room, and it's easy on gas.

As for insurance, the insurance law changed a few years ago in Colorado. If I remember right, the law used to be no-fault for medical (your own insurance paid your medical no matter who was at fault). Now the insurance of the party at fault is liable. My insurance went down at least $100 a year.

Yeah, funny about that, Major. The banks and the insurance companies are making tens of billion of dollars in profits every financial year here in Oz, and yet they still increase their fees and premiums every twelve months. And the rich get richer . . .

The rich have to constantly adjust inflation in order to stay rich!

Wait a minute, you only have to pay registration when you obtain a new or different vehicle. You pay it once. License is a yearly fee and smog check is ever 2 years. My newest car is a 96 El Dorado and it's just like $65 a year. My Mom's 92 Dodge is $52, my 73 Z-28 is $47 and my 1950 Packard with year of manufacture plates extra cost is like $42.

So what should I do? I just sent the check into Sacramento?[huh] It's right there on the top of my Renewal Notice; Registration Fee $40, License Fee $51, Weight Fee $80, Special Plate Fee $30, and County Fee $10.:( I bought the truck brand new in 2000.

My cars are $23 a year to register. No smog check, no inspection, no vehicle property tax. It's one of the many reasons I moved back to Tennessee from DC.
