A number of years ago I traveled down to southern NJ to attend a wedding on my wife's side. We stayed in a little down deep in the pine barrens, where time seemed to stop.
We had breakfast in a little cafe on a dirt road that looked like nothing in it had changed since it was built, probably in the 20's, and it reminded me of all the pictures I had seen of just such a place in the past.
People stared at us because we were from out of town and everyone knew everyone else. But for a moment it seemed like we had traveled back in time, when things were a little slower and there was more room to grow.
I fully expected to see pre-war cars parked in front when we left and was a little disappointed when they were not there.
