A little background: in 1966 Nasville based R&B and soul DJ William 'Hoss' Allen started a TV show called The !!!! Beat to showcase the talent that he regularly featured on his radio show. Unlike other broadcasters of the period Hoss insisted on filming the show in colour, and he went to WFAA in Dallas - one of only a very few independent TV stations in the south with colour video capabilities. There were 26 shows broadcast in 1966, and they featured a who's who of contemporary soul and R&B, with a house band led by Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown. So far, so irrelevant...

The legendary Louis Jordan was recording for the tiny Astra label in Pennsylvania in 1966, a far cry from his glory days of 20 years before, and the story goes that he turned up at the TV studio while on tour in Texas, and Hoss dedicated an entire show to him. Louis & The Tympany Five performed excellent live versions of Caldonia, G.I. Jive, All I Do Is Dream, Ram-Bunk- Shush and a lovely Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'. The show was the 15th edition broadcast, but the band also appears in show #11 when Louis performed Saturday Night Fish Fry.

Bootleg videos have been circulating throughout the soul collecting world for years, but they were officially re-released by German reissue company Bear Family on DVD last year. Show #15 is on Volume 4, while show #11 is on Volume 3, so if you want the complete Louis Jordan on The !!!! Beat you'll have to get both volumes.

If anyone is interested in buying the shows in the US copies are available from CD Wolf; in the UK copies can be found at Red Lick; in the rest of Europe copies can be ordered directly from Bear Family.

I was happy when "Swing Parade" was released in a Three Stooges DVD set just so I could get Jordan's performances!
This does sound reet and gone.
