Love on the African Queen

I watched 'The African Queen' on TCM last night...it's been a while...

I know it was probably verboten to think such a thing when the movie first came out, but do you think Charlie and Rosie 'did it' that certain night aboard the boat? That next morning... lovey-dovey talk, breakfast in bed, etc. I thought it was the river rapids rocking the boat.

i haven't seen that one, but in 'the Big Sleep' i was wondering if Bogart and the bookshop girl 'did it' when he says "i happen to have a good bottle of rye in my pocket" and they lock the shop door while it rains.

Herringbone kid, I love that scene in The Big Sleep. I find it funny that Bogart asks the bookseller girl to remove her...you know...eyeglasses!

I say yes to those two questions. Submitted for your approval, I add 'Out of the Past' to the list. Did Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer 'do it' when she invited him to her house? The rain is pouring and wind is blowing furiously as they kiss.. :)

i must say i'm shocked that in the 40s you could walk into a reputable bookstore, flash a bottle of whiskey at the bespectacled shopgirl and 'do it' with her.

and we think WE live in decadent times !

I think that the intimacy of holding each other through the dark night was enough to consummate the relationship for a fine Christian woman like Rose. The physical intimacy would follow.

However, "The Big Sleep" I am not so sure of. It sure looks like they're going to, but then there's that cut and Bogie heads out the door. -Tough one to call.

Sure did!

no, Rosey would never do anything like that, she was too old fashioned.
I'm not so sure about that. Good old fashioned attraction tends to usurp strictly imposed customs.
Especially in the wild..;)

Yep. Some thing never change. ;)

I was reading an interview with a WWII veteran recently in a book. While sex was not the subject, he digressed to talk about perceptions of sexuality today versus the past. I will paraphrase his comment but he essentially said people in the old days did the same thing as people today. The only difference is they did not talk about it as much!

Some thoughts to ponder when we look at films or think Paris Hilton will be the death of society.

No No No! Bogard did not "do it" with her......c'mon! He has charisma. He flirlted with her. Just like when the woman cabbie gave her card to him after the tail job. He asks" day or night" she says "night is better, I work during the day"

Which is why those old movies were better than those today, IMHO. Lots were left to THE IMAGINATION..which is better that bareing it all. And the censors in the 40's obviously would not have allowed what is passed off today.

Yes they did, in your imagination.

NO in your imagination they did. That is the magic. Imply. Suggest. Toy with your inner workings. Much more fun. Flirtation. Gotta admit, sometimes the promise of things to come, the toying, the banter, the inurendo...is far more "sexy" than the XXX film which shows it all!!!

IMHO

Huh? What is the point of charisma if you ain't gonna do anything with it? :) ;)

If it is in my imagination then they would not need those censors to purge and suppress! :p

I understand and agree with the idea of the implication of sex, etc. But it isn't so bad to admit that our screen heros had sex in films. It was just cleverly alluded to.

and nothing has seemed to change much. If every girl in high school "did" it, then why did I always end up with the ones who didn't?:cool2:

Scratching my head...

What I want to know is...why hasn't "African Queen" been released on DVD in the U.S? I know it's been available in Europe and Australia for some time. It seems like a no-brainer. Anybody got the scoop?

People have sex regularly in GA films. Sometimes gay sex too. And S&M. And they also commit adultery, have abortions and take drugs. You just have to understand the codes. They were working under the restrictions of Hays and the scrutiny of moral lobbyists like the Legion of Decency so everything had to be implied. I read an interview once with Dmytryk in which he said liked working with this restrained suggestiveness, and that it was much more effective than the modern full frontal approach – just as the suggested terrors in a film like the original “The Haunting is much more effective than the full-on computer aided gore of modern horror.

My favourite “codes are the swear words in 1950s British war films. When I was younger I used to think soldiers in WW2 really did call each other “flipping beggars.
