Mid-August, year 1946 would appear to be the answer, which actually means that the Youthful Smartness Mallory hats (like yours) must be mid-1940s or earlier, assuming Stetson sold off the pure Mallory branded stock quickly and replaced with their own version.

If it doesn't say "Whippet", it's not a Whippet. It's just a hat with wide edge binding.

I have several Mallorys that appear to be a Whippet from the out side. Mallory made very good durable hats in their time. Whippet or not you have a real hat.

Mallory hats were made long after stetson acquired them, and they continued to make a quality product.

I've seen "Mallory by Stetson" hats, but they have all been fairly recent, within the past 25 years or so, and have been low quality wool felts.
