What’s your opinion on the Stetson whippet fedora ?? For a first fedora?

Modern or vintage? It's certainly one of the most popular Stetsons, historically. Decent quality, classic shape. I think modern ones are mostly available in the Japanese market.

Vintage can be had, but their popularity means you may pay a bit for one. I've seen them go for $500-$700; however, the market has softened and you may be able to pick one up for a few hundred.

I'm in the minority on Whippets, as I've never been enamored with them. The wide binding and wide ribbon make them relatively more formal looking (IMHO). For me, other hats are more versatile. That having been said, my reasons for not liking the Whippet may not be applicable to you. But of the most well known Stetson fedora models, I favor the *******. They're a little bit harder to find than a Whippet, but easy to wear proportions as a first hat.

Then please explain to me why I only have one Whippet and a half-dozen *******s!

I like Whippets well enough, but I have enough non-Whippet lids that are in the same vein. The popularity and therefore cost of the darn things keep me at a distance.

Give me some recommendations. Love to look at some other hats. 1930s 1920s style. Thanks

That's a tall order. Over the years, there have been so many hat brands and models you can't pin it down. Again, though, are you looking vintage or new? If vintage, your best bet is to look through the What Hat are you Wearing Today thread to see some different styles and troll eBay, antique stores, and vintage shops until you find what you like in your size.

If new, then I'd suggest looking at a custom and getting exactly what you want. There are several great custom makers you could choose from. Many have their own threads on the lounge. Gannon, Wolfbrae, Hufvud, to name a few.

BTW, the Whippet was introduced in the 1940s and hit it's stride in the 50s.

I might add my 2 cents to zero in on what size you need to have, and browse ebay a bit for something that catches your eye. there are a lot of decent classic 50's, 60's, and early 70's hats out there in a decent fur felt... way nicer than the modern wool hats. If youre here, Im positive you wont have just ONE hat for long anyway.... most of us are like kids in a toy store... something shiny always catches our eye. Find something that gives you a smile and go for it ( then be ready to do it again)
