Michael, here is the story, as printed in the Washington Post earlier this year:
"Haggard was out of prison and an established country star when he appeared as a guest on ABC’s “The Johnny Cash Show” in August 1969. According to Gray, Cash encouraged Haggard to talk about his rough past on television, and signal to the audience his hits like “Mama Tried” were truly autobiographical. The dialogue on air went something like this, Gray said, after Cash brought up San Quentin:
Haggard: “Funny you mention that, Johnny.”
Cash: “What?”
Haggard: “San Quentin.”
Cash: “Why’s that?”
Haggard: “The first time I ever saw you perform, it was at San Quentin.”
Cash: “I don’t remember you being in that show, Merle.”
Haggard: “I was in the audience, Johnny.”
Even though Haggard’s prison time wasn’t a secret, it was the first time he addressed it in front of a national audience, Gray said. ABC got letters from angry viewers, unhappy the network had an ex-convict on the air. But the whole appearance, as well as Cash’s encouragement to be honest, influenced his career for the better.

Dr. John has some wild hats.
Every time something comes up about Hank Jr. I'm reminded of the AL Gubernatorial campaign of 1986. Two knuckleheads, Bill Baxley and Charlie Graddick were vying for the Democratic nomination and Bill Baxley brought his dog and pony show through the city I was working in.
Baxley was friends with Jr. and Jr. agreed to come into town to perform a little concert in support of Baxley. I was working the traffic division at the time and we were tasked with providing a motorcycle ****** for the motorcade and then security at the venue.
The plan was for Jr. and Baxley to meet up at a predetermined location and we would ****** the motorcade, including Jrs. bus to the venue. Well, Jr. shows up over thirty minutes late, already drunk as a spider monkey but he did look good in his hat and his custom knee high inlayed boots with his jeans tucked in.
We finally got them all to the venue and about the time Jr. started his third song, paper flyers started falling from the sky, landing all over the park where he was playing, including the stage. A small plane could be seen flying over the venue and when I picked up one of the flyers, they were, of course, flyers from the Charlie Graddick campaign. One of the funniest sights I've ever witnessed. Baxley was so angry I thought his head was gonna explode. A redder face I have never seen.
That's the year H. Guy Hunt, Amway salesman with no college education was elected governor. The first Republican elected governor in AL since 1868.
