New Budget M-65?

Hello, I'm looking for an M-65 field jacket for under $250, I know a lot of people recommend thrifting or shopping surplus to get a vintage one, however I'd really like to avoid the uncertainties of conditio, repairs, smell, etc. and would rather just buy new from a modern manufacturer. From the research I've done online it seems to come down to Alpha Industries, Helikon Tex, and Bronson, so I was wondering which would be the best quality?

I've heard mixed opinions; some think Alpha is the best as they are the original manufacturers of the M-65 but others say their quality has significantly dropped since becoming a commercialized clothing brand.

Would love recommendations, thank you!

Does it have to be M-65 or are you open to other similar field jackets?

There are some great options out there and I can understand the concern about the issues that pop up with vintage, like things that are new in package but still have a musty smell.

Happy to make recommendations based on your answer.

Hi! No it doesn't have to specifically be an M65, I just like that style of jacket (the material, pockets, color, not a necessity but the hood that can fold into the collar is very cool as well)

Okay! That makes things both easier and more interesting because there are a ton of field jacket options in different materials and fits which I think you'll like and perhaps find even more interesting than the M-65.

What would you like to wear it with? Do you like to cinch in a jacket waist when you're wearing it?

I'm very new to fashion lol (mostly just wear jeans/leggings with T-shirts or tank tops) so honestly I'd take any recommendations for what to wear with it haha! Yes I like to cinch jackets, either with an included cord like the m65 has or with a belt over it

Okay this is super helpful. I’m about to fall asleep but I’ll get back to you tomorrow.

I've never heard of the brand. I just saw it on sale at Amazon. Hard to say if you will get your $60 worth.

Somewhat after the fact, but if it helps as a reference for anyone later stumbling across this thread...

Brandit make budget gear. Reasonably decent. I would, on balance, plump for the Helikon or the Alpha (for my money those are on par with each other, the Helikon being usually a chunk of change cheaper) for something the buyer already really wants. The Brandit, however, is an excellent way of trying the style without committing a lot of money if unsure.

Other alternatives worth looking at are the predecessors of the M65, the WW2 era M43, and the M51 version (as worn by Elvis in Germany). These latter two can be found widely reproduced for the living history / re-enactment market - see, for example, whatpriceglory.com or sofmilitary.co.uk. There are always much more expensive reproductions coming from the Japanese labels, though these often get into several hundred dollars price bracket, at which point for me (YMMV, of course), they start to become something other than a utilitarian, throw-on jacket. Beautiful, no doubt, but not something I'd throw on to go hiking in or take the dog out or whatever, which for me personally really takes them away from the point of a field jacket.
